Default Holley 4160 or Summit 600 carb

I have a bone stock 93 roller cam motor with a 5 speed in a 84’ Gt that i am going to run carbureted and I would like to know which would be a better carb. I can get a slightly used 4160 for $175 or buy a new Summit racing M2008 600 carb for $329. I know the summit carb is a Holley based carb as well. The summit carb and annular boosters and sight glasses as a bonus too.

Can anyone recommend which would be better?

Personally I would say watch for a used Edelbrock instead, as they’re easier to tune (and stay in tune) than the Holley carbs and their derivatives, but of the two that used 4160 will probably need a rebuild. Usually when someone sells a used carb seems to be that it’s gunked up with gasket chunks from the ethanol in our fuel these days.

I have heard that the SUM-M08600VS from Summit is a good carburetor as it has annular boosters on all four corners.

'Better' is going to be partly determined by which one you prefer tuning and working on.
I liked my 'Street Avenger' when I had it, but have decided to go TBI on this build.
83 5.0 GT. Quicker than it looks! 10:1 (or just over) 306, Motorsport a332 cam, 140A alt, t5 conv, 8.8 w/ 3.27's, Edel rpm, alum rad, very worked e7's, Holley SA carb, etc... SOLD IT!!!!

Now an 1981 Granada! .040 over 302, Edel E-street heads... Currently building a 347 because, why not?

That summit piece really looks nice. But I ran a 4160 on my stock 302 and it was a little too big. Kinda going to have a hard time with tuning from the idle/part throttle transition. I put MSD and a upgraded coil and fixed that. I agree the Eddy is a bette street manner carb. Less tuning required but don’t let people derail you on the Holley style carb. Great carbs and as long as your willing to learn you will be fine. Only major tuning issue I had was since it is a little on the big side, when i went from summer to winter. And I work graveyard so turning my car on at 3 am really did make a difference from starting at daytime.

I like that summit piece as you won’t be able to tell if the base on the holley is warped. A lot of people (including myself) have over torqued the carb and warp the base plate. You can file it smooth but be prepared for anything when buying used.

    Good luck.
