Default Removing traction bars from pre 84 1/2

Is there any secrets to removing the slapper bars from the rear end? I got the nuts off, and now the bars themselves won’t move. I tried tapping (read: mediaeval beating) with a 4 lb hammer to loosen them , but alas no dice.

Lot's of rust forms inside the threads. put the nuts on until they are almost flush with the end and use a big brass hammer. You can use PB Blaster from above the U bolts and maybe heat, it just takes force if they are severely rusted. Hit one end, then the other, so it walks off.

Free ALL as a rust penetrant has been the best I have used lately. You can pick it up at Oreilly's Auto if you have one. Wasn't sure about the stuff before I bought it, but now it's my GO TO! Haven't bought any other brand since. Good Luck!

Been using this stuff for 20+ years. Cost about 5.00 can. Not found everywhere.

Let it soak in few minutes. If not, overnite.
Can use heat later if needed. Will smoke a bit but does not ignite after soaking.
If available, an air hammer, with a punch tool, installed can work like magic.

Thanks for the advice! After a lot of soaking, force, and pb blaster I got one side off. Let’s see how the other goes next week.

    I’ll have to try those.
