Default SEM Trim Paint for Bumpers

i am prepping to refresh the bumpers on the Ghia coupe. I used SEM trim paint in the past on my other Fox however it seems that SEM has either updated the formula or changed the name since that time. There are two trim options, Trim Black and Trim Black Ultra, plus a Bumper Coater and Bumper Coater Flexible. The Ultra comes in a Satin finish which i believe is what would match the side trim pieces. Can someone please confirm which part number would match the body side trim?

Personally I would go with the first option the Trim Black. Any of the paints will work, but the Ultra and the Bumper Coater are really designed for later model vehicles and not our 80's vintage.

I THINK that’s what I’ve used in the past. However, I find it interesting that the Ultra version has sheen options and wonder if the Satin would be a better match to the side trim pieces. Your thoughts?

I just used some last night. the original SEM trim black 39143 is the aerosol can which bugs me because it spits when you spray it, but looks great when it sprays correctly. 39144 is a quart size if you have a sprayer set up.

The OEM trim is essentially a Satin sheen, but as with every manufacturer Satin means something different. With that said, the Trim Black is a Satin sheen when applied correctly. As stated when it sprays properly it looks very good and original. I have had issues with the spray nozzles too and is just one reason I prefer to use my spray gun and the quart size. The Ultra in satin may match or it might be a bit glossier than the Trim Black, I can't say for sure as I haven't used it. The newer car trim seems to be a bit shinier/glossier to my eye than the trim on the 80's car, so I would expect that from the Ultra Black. Best of Luck!

While the project isn't done, I've seen what Trey did on my 85 Saleen clone build in person. Its jaw-dropping.

As close to perfection that I've seen since these cars were brand new. And then again most of these cars had plenty of flaws when they were brand new. Thats all the more stuff that Trey fixed on my 85.

Both life and engine problems continue to hold that car hostage. Hoping to eventually get to drive it and do a few shows with it, etc.

The regular Trim Black it is then. I am tempted to buy in quart size seeing that some have had issues however I don't really need that much. Thx guys.

I’ve only used the SEM Trim Black also and find it lays out well from the can and the finish looks good. Even on larger surfaces. It flashes quick and can recoat faster too.

I’ve also had to fix a few rock chips and just spray a dab on a piece of cardboard and use a fine model brush to fill the chip up.

If you are using off the shelf aerosols I recommend going to any paint store that can custom pack spray bombs and see if you can get a superior nozel to plug down on the can first. Those factory tips are always cheap crap.

I only have problems with the SEM aerosol cans. I did use a harbor freight cheap purple hvlp gun to spray some SEM interior paint and that's the way to go if you have the equipment to use. My local paint supplier does offer the aerosol packaging but it's $20 something a can, so I'll just use the hvlp gun from now on.

I used the trim black aerosol cans for my trim, mirrors, and sail panels. It defiantly looks good, I was a little worried about the durability of it on the front bumper so for that spot I ended up using the 2K rat rod satin black from eastwood. It also looks really good but didn't lay down quite as flat but that could just be me.

I despise SEM paint for this exact reason. You might get 2 cans out of 10 that spray correctly. The rest of them spit and splatter all over something you (hopefully) spent HOURS prepping. It's garbage. I quit using it some time ago.

A quart and a spray gun is the only way to go if using SEM paint. I agree with the frustration when using the aerosol cans.
