Default Who has Lost their job due to Covid 19?

Guess I'm in first, LOL. Laid off a few hours ago. Got a small (REAL small) severance. And I'm in my late 40's so likely to never get another job making the same money again. My hope is to not get unemployment. If I decide to, my (previous) employer said to let them know the day I file so they can go approve it ASAP. They could wait 10 days to do so by law so YAY me. So I guess they are sort of being nice about it. Obviously management decided to not take a pay cut across the board in favor of taking out a few completely. There were several others let go.

We are in a pretty good position and were living well below our means with no consumer debt and have a good size emergency fund and at least as of today, she still has her position so we can make our bills. I updated my resume and reached to several contacts and have a couple things that hopefully lead somewhere. Sigh.....

    Sorry to hear this
good luck and I hope things work out for you.
as far as the 10-day waiting period, I thought that has been suspended?

I have been furloughed which means I still have a job, but I am not making any money. And no severance.
Same boat as you though, wife is still getting paid so we are able to make ends meet, so far.

we are in the same age group though, so I feel your pain on that one. Don’t worry man, things will work out eventually.

My son isn't working, but the company he works for took the PPP stimulus package. So he's still getting paid. The rest of us are considered 'essential' I guess. My daughter's hours were cut though.

I manage an auto body shop and the owner had me lay everyone off, besides myself. I'm basically just doing renovation work around here, cleaning up, throwing out junk etc... It's actually been really nice these last two weeks here alone. It's quiet, much less stress than usual. And I can dabble on cleaning up the Mustang after it spent all winter in storage.

My wife is a teacher and is still getting paid so we're fine for now. She is kinda going crazy at home though, with our 2 year and 1 year olds. Poor woman.

I was given a “long vacation” til this is over. I’m just hoping that vacation isn’t permanent since I suspect used car sales will be down for a while. I work(ed?) as the general repair guy for a used car lot part time, for what felt like stupid low money so I could get some “equivalent experience” on my resume

I lost my career / job to that other virus called NAFTA back in 2004. Nobody cared about me or the millions of other Americans who permanently lost their jobs through no fault of their own. I was a dedicated employee for 31 years but that made no difference at all. Just stabbed in the back by my employer and our government.

I'm still waiting on that stimulus check...

I received a 3 week furlough, collecting unemployment now, company is thinking of laying off 3500 when I go back on 4-30. I should be ok let's see. Wife working in medical field, luckily with babies at clinic and not the hospital.

Wife got laid off, I'm still at it. I work for Loomis (armored truck) so we're "essential", though we have had hours reduced slightly due to all the retail businesses closed or reduced. ATM's are hot and heavy since bank lobbies are closed. Can't hardly keep up with those things at times. Got our stimulus Tuesday.

I'm assuming you guys are kidding about the essential part. That whole Essential deal is a joke. We are an "essential" company too. We provide IT services to 700 customers from hospitals to police and government. They gave us all official certificates.

Apparently also essential is the florist, the car wash, Dunkin Donuts, Starbucks, The local cake bakery shop, the dry cleaners, the realtor office, the Edward Jones investment office, all the banks, the hardware stores, the Direct TV store, my friend that details cars at a dealership is essential, all the Golf Courses. If you trim bushes at a golf course, you are ESSENTIAL. I am pretty sure the only business that they actually did not consider "essential" is hair and nail salons. Everyone else I know is essential. I don't know a single person who was not considered essential outside of my wife's hair stylist. My wife is also considered essential as she works for one of the local hospital giants, but not directly IN the hospital. We will get by. living without debt and having an emergency fund has made things much less stressful.

Sorry to hear that man. I'm assuming you found a way to survive without the Government and I hope you did well. I personally don't want a check and wish you could go online and either refuse it or say redirect mine elsewhere to some charity or apply it back to the National Debt from whence it came. These days, they are trying to get people to rely too much on government and then get comfortable with it. I know we can't talk politics and I don't believe that statement crosses the line. I will stop with that.

Wait, you make those in Cherryville NC? That's pretty cool. I mean, obviously I feel your pain but I did not realize Ford had suppliers in NC. Sounds like you are maybe on a furlough. You are not getting paid but expected to be able to return (without any specific guarantee that ever happens). I would rather have that if it helps. I can get unemployment if I want to just like you can so I am not exactly sure the technical difference. I know I am not on furlough though. I did get severance pay so maybe that's it?

In my case, we keep the cash flowing. I'm by no means more important in any way to anyone else, but what my company does is pretty important. Everyone is doing their banking by ATM, ITM, VTM, or whatever, so that has to be kept running. Lots are just cashing their checks instead of depositing them since the lines are long. Our biggest demand right now is the ATM's. The grocery stores also need cash to operate, so there's that. Even so, we're on a mandatory 1 day a week off to reduce hours. I'm fortunate to be still working, I don't take it for granted one bit. The wife surely doesn't. I thank God every day for it.

Thank you for your humility billkandi, but that was not my intention. You seem very honest and humble. That is a critical function that you do for sure. I was equally humble and thankful every morning when I woke up to still have a job. I am no better than anyone for sure as well and was well aware of it long before this week.
My point was that is what happens when the government gets involved. Only essential people are allowed out but 99.9999% of people are considered essential so what did you really accomplish other than seeming like you were enacting some legislation? Exactly what were the results of this legislation other than putting millions of people out of work? I can't imagine it did anything to reduce the spread if 99.9999% of people are still out and about. I can't even see a difference in foot or car traffic here.
I wish people would quit counting on the government (EITHER side) to fix their life. Since when have they done anything right? Santa Claus does not live in Washington DC. Just ask Ken P.

    I understand and agree.
In regards to traffic of all kinds, there is a marked decrease in car traffic in this area. I'm on the interstate in the morning from about 0415 commuting to Huntsville. I'd say there is about 60-70% less traffic than normal. The majority of that is semi's. Later in the day, you're right, there are still a lot of folks on the road. Too many.

Hang in there. It gets better the older you get unless you give up. What a nice ride i got since being 40. Went out on top.
Having worked in the auto industry since the 70's, learned layoffs or job loss were common and something to plan for financially.
Actually worked at one of the home box stores during layoffs. Autos down, homes up. Worked out good.
Having a forklift driver license allowed shifting between industries doing basically the same thing.
Got to experience the whole deal and then some from different angles, employers, using my skill set.
Got two much better employers since turning that age. More money, the warehouse was the best, last one at the factory fine.
Times changed since the 90's in the way most companies operate now.
May have to take a pay cut or accept a less than ideal employer(s) for a few years.
It is also hard to job hunt when one has not done that in many years.
Did do a lot of driving checking out businesses and the drive itself.
Would have loved to drive trucks but did not happen-yet. Part time JIT van may be fun. Free 'vacation' travel. But too many hours.

Took two years to settle in and get hired into the last one. Temp/contract work to hire got me in. Had to prove something.
Did go thru 3-4 jobs while waiting for a ship to sail back in. One was 17 year voyage, next was 12. Different ships.
Opportunity does not knock- it speeds by waiving to you. Temp or contract can search and fit. You call the shots. And pay/benif can be better.
Does take hundreds of searches and time sticking by the fact of doing what you would be happy with, not just working for a paycheck.
Hardest part is calling it quits and jumping ship for a better job hoping the ship does not sink a few years later.
Sure did not want to board a ship that seen better days. Follow your passion and intuition.

Never thought i would get two cool jobs after the one i had at 40. Both were new sites from business expansion and needed workers.
And experienced ones at that. The hr at the warehouse showed me a stack of apps. Rookies. They needed someone like me to dive in.
Was told later on i saved the company contract with GM. They were in dire straights. My strong point was i could count accurately.
Took a year to get hired into the last factory in 2012. Global company for many years.. Now they have to direct hire. Too many quit or got canned.
Got into Ford back in the 70's by filling out an ap every day. After a month, one day they hired everyone that applied to add a shift.
30 and out is for the most part a thing of the past. Lucky to stay 10 nowadays. Have to bargain job perimeters in writing at the interview.
Never take a voluntary layoff without a call back date in writing.
Stay cool, be patient and positive. Linkedin is your friend and be honest, even blunt, with the composition so as not to waste anyone's time.

What”s weird for me this time around is that I’ve usually been the one let go. Not this time. Once in awhile I’ve been ahead of the boot. I’m a Mechanical Engineer by training and preference. For whatever reason, some management regimes think making engineers into managers is a good idea. Not in my case. It never works out well. We can’t have William’s career peaking too soon, you know. Got let go last August from a position in the “Work Truck Industry” . Millenials with their MBA’s are taking over. Found a new position 3 weeks later with an overhead crane manufacturer and half the commute. This company decided it is essential and hasn’t closed. Been Working from home 3 days per week for the last 3 weeks. Haven’t put gas in the dd for 2 weeks.

All I can say is, if you are out of a job, apply for unemployment NOW! If you haven’t already. This puts a mark on the company’s record with the state about how they treat their employees and will affect their unemployment insurance rates. Companies may use an event like this to “clean house” and try to reduce labor expenses. Good luck trying to find youngsters that want to work though.

I have a feeling that when the economy opens up again, it will take off with a roar. Be ready with an up-to-date resume and references if you need to make a move.

I think this is very dependent on where you live as the governors of each state seem to be setting the rules. Here in PA I think we have some of the stricter rules about essential businesses.

I'm retired so it hasn't really affected me much, but my son is out of work for the first time since he graduated high school 11 years ago. He's an auto technician and one of the reasons he chose that career is because there's always a demand for trained techs. He's in good shape financially and almost certain to be back at work when this is all over, so he's lucky in that. He works at a dealership and the auto repair shop is allowed to be open but the sales part is closed by governors order. Under those circumstances there is very little business so they are running a very small crew and having trouble keeping them busy.

His employer has been very good about communicating with the employees about the status of things, and hopes to be able to keep the repair shop open till this blows over but it's iffy when they sometimes only have 3 customers all day. One good thing is that the employer is continuing to pay his portion of the health insurance for those who are off and while they will have to repay the employee portion when they return to work he said he will spread that repayment out instead of taking it all at once.

I have my own very strong opinions about this whole mess but won't voice them as that couldn't help but go political.

I am quite fortunate in all this mess having just retired at the end of January. I'm lucky to have a secure pension that is not impacted by the falling markets. My investments are down, but that will in time recover and is not money essential to my day-to-day needs. I have a lot of concern for my former firefighting co-workers (my brother-in-law being still active also) who have to be out dealing with this pandemic in their daily work. I doubt we've seen the worst of it yet here. Thus far the biggest impact we've seen in our houshold is that my wife has taken over the home office and now works full time from home. Her job remains secure and even so she would be in a position to manage just fine without. The worst situations here are with longterm care facilities, and that is a huge concern for me as my Mom who in nearly 80 is currently living in a seniors lodge. They have been very proactive and agressive with controlling all access to only staff, no visitors at all. That is reassuring, but it's hard to not be able to visit her.

It's hard to know who to be most sympathetic to; the people who have been put out of work and face losing everything they have, the people who are still working and face the threat of the virus, or those who have been infected and are fighting to survive or the families who have lost someone and cannot properly grieve for them. This is a very difficult situation in so many ways, I hope we can reach the end of it intact as individuals and a society.

Yea, this has been a “fun” month. Wife got her walking papers after almost 10 years in customer service at a hotel chain.

My daughter got hers a day later

    Mine came the following week.

My son was already in the hunt before this crap all got started.

I have some set aside but it’s not going to last very long. Lots of consumer debt because things did not go well with the new house build to say the least and I frankly stayed too long at my last job before looking to move on. Last one in, first one out. Mandatory 6 months unpaid leave. I’m burning 20+ hours per day scouring the world for another opportunity - no plans to be made a fool of by waiting around.

    So that’s my story

And if I had that $40K offer from a coworker on that 85 Saleen clone build now I think I’d take it and run.
