    Default Home HVAC question.

    Any HVAC people out there.
my home has a central furnace/air handler for both the ac and heating. The original owner installed an aprilaire 6 in filter housing (filter is 20x25x6) right before the unit. Also, there are 3 supply/inlets that have a filter at the wall all 1 inch (20x20, 20x25, 16x20). Is that too much filtration? What MERV should I use to maximize filtration (for 4 Newfoundland dogs) and maximize air flow?
    thanks Paul.

I am not an HVAC expert nor a home HVAC expert, but working in commercial construction as well as residential for 30 years, I have seen a unit or two.

The supply inlets with filters are all of those at the unit itself? Or do you actually have return air ducts from different areas of the house going back to the central unit?

Yes. Was a 4 zoned system but took one off and had it converted to a heat pump supple for upstairs. Have 3 zones now. Supply from main floor, a bedroom, and finished basement combine into large and inlet to the air handler. Just before it though, is the space guard that holds the large filter (20x25x6). So at the inlets are the 1 inch thick filters.

I do HVAC service for a living and the 6 inch filter at the base is enough for what you described, the others at the grill are redundant but will keep the duct clean of dirt and pet hair.

So maybe high MERV for the aprilaire style filter, and just basic filters for large particle filtration at the inlets. Like cheap filters for pet hair, etc.
