Default 79-83 medium red and 84-86 Canyon red the same?

I've never understood 79-83. But recently looking for parts I keep coming across 79-83 interior parts listed as "medium red " that look exactly like "canyon red" in the pictures.

I always thought the 79-83 stuff was a bright red and not even close.

Am I wrong? Is medium red the same as canyon red?

I understand completely. If you look at the '79-'83, the Red is almost like a Maraschino cherry Red, while the '84 is almost like a Brown. Side-by-side, they are very different.

Crazy because everything I see on eBay looks the darker red. Like this. It just does not look like bright red to me

Yeah, the seller listed it wrong. "1979-86 Mustang NOS armrest pad." That's an '84 piece all day long. (even though he noted 'D9', which is a 1979 part number). Maybe he's trying to "cast a wider net"

Just because someone is selling Mustang parts, especially Four Eyed parts, don't assume they know anything about Mustangs or the differences year to year.

Definitely an 84-86 Canyon Red arm rest. Good Luck!

Indeed. Witness the Scott Drake 1979-86 Mustang blue dashpad.

That's just it. It's ALL the D9 items that have that shade of red called "medium red".

None have an E4 number attached.

Repops are out. I thought the repops would be good but recently purchased absolute garbage from Daniel Carpenter.

The issue here once again is that part numbers do not necessarily equate to colors. The D9 prefix indicates that is was originally designed (or redesigned) for a 1979 vehicle. The center console didn't really change from 1979-1986 so many if not most of the part numbers for the pieces will be D9 prefixes. Same goes for items such as the sill plate covers, the metal trim above the door openings for the headliner, the front and rear headliner trim, etc, etc.

Bottom line is that most of the trim pieces didn't match even on the car brand new! The hard plastic was once shade, the soft plastic another, molded in color one shade, and painted/dyed another shade. So once again which shade of color do you want to match? Sorry not to get overly dramatic by quality of finish wasn't really that great back in the 80's compared to today's cars. If you truly want your interior parts and pieces to match you will most likely need to paint/dye them as needed. This will require either SEM rattle cans, Auto Supply house interior paint, Colorbond interior paint, or some other option. The best option IMHO is to use a molded in color piece of plastic and match your color to either the backside or an area that has no sun fading or damage. Then re-color everything as needed. The interior will look brand NEW and even better than original. Cost wise you are generally going to spend $50-150 on paint depending on color and how much you need. I highly recommend spraying with a spray gun when doing larger pieces such as quarter panels, door panels, etc. Good luck!

OH! I also highly recommend using your interior trim code and year model to make sure you have the right interior color.

I'm more versed on part numbers then you're giving me credit for being.

I understand what you're saying about the part number, and it would be true if it were only on the part. Not on the box for packaging. The same way you would never find a part with a "ZZ" only "ZE" on the part itself.

I get that I have to paint it but the parts I'm looking at can't be painted. That D9 seatbelt sure looks canyon read to me. Can't paint that. Sill plates are another one. If you paint them they don't last long.

    Fwiw... I believe there's three different part numbers for sill plates. D9 , E3 , F0.
Slight difference in texture , mostly different on the underside with ribbing added.

    (Edit. I checked. D9 , E2 , and E9. )

Was simply wondering if they made a dark red interior 79-93. A color other than the bright red commonly found.

    Turns out. I believe I have some 79 - 83 red parts.

I don't appear to be nearly as bright red as I remember. I thought the interior color was more of a fire engine red. Looks like it's just a slightly lighter maroon.

My comments were not directed towards you personally. It was an observation for many sellers and even retailers today that list everything as fitting 1979-93 Mustangs. I didn't question your ability to read/understand part numbers and apologize if that appeared to be implied.

Ok. I get that. I do that on eBay with things on occasion admittedly. I appreciate the clarity.
