Default Car is 42 years old today

Marked its 42nd 'birthday'. Bucked at DAP 10/3/78.
Left Ford Rouge property 7:39-8 am 10/5/78 via convoy to local Ford dealer in DSO 48. Have the Marti reports.
Driven about 5k a year now. In the 80's was 25k. Rarely has been garaged, parked outside most of its time.
Retains all functions for reliable fun daily driving when needed 24/7/365, same as in the 80's. It's still painted black.....
Everything works, lighter. Oem spare holds air, have all the moldings. Bolted on sfc's holding up fine no movement.
Rust damage repair ongoing and hopefully in check. Rocker panels, chassis. Engine, trans, electrical, interior, fine.
Need to replace sandblasted w/s. Pretty sure glass shop in 80's put in an old replacement glass by mistake AND i let it go.
The new one few years prior from there was so clear had to refocus eyes for a week. Not this one. Lots of glare.
Pic taken earlier today, no candles. Spot welding sparks would be more appropriate:

Continue ps lower door rust repairs with bondo glass while weather is good.
First rough layer done. Will be solid and look fine once finished.
Did the rusted out section behind rear wheel. No one has noticed it is a repair. Eh, no metal-no rust.

Neighbors trees have started to drop them dam leaves that get everywhere.
This year trying out a towel to stop most of them from entering cowl.
Going to switch over to large nylon windshield cover to protect moldings too. Leaves go under the moldings and rot.

Cleaned out the grossly small slit, (engineering failure as a drain) at the front of the Fairmont's passenger door of summer's detrius and drained several quarts of water out

It's normally parked with nose down hill.

Started the car!!! Whoot!! But, valve train noise so shut it down after a minute so I can check it out.
I did have two plug wires reversed so I did get a fireball backfire through the carb. Singed my eyebrows, eyelashes, hair. Buddy was here helping out and he kindly said 'let me put your hair out. You're smoldering'. Sigh. But it ran! Had to jump the selenoid because it wasn't working, but, closer.

Went out for probably the last drive of the year yesterday. I wanted to burn up as much of the fuel in the tank as I could before winter as I'm going to be swapping out the crappy plastic fuel cell for an aluminum one. I plan to redo the entire mounting to lower the tank in the trunk more to drop the CofG down and to make it possible to toss at least a small bag in on top occasionally.

Default time for new door window run weatherstrip

Moved this repair onto and up the priority list. Forgot about it for years.
Drove 20 miles to NPD and bought new ps door window run weatherstrip.
Current 42 year old one is shot dry rotted missing sections.
NPD/Daniel Carpenter item, 20.00. Perfect fit. Corner is all the way in.
Took 3 hours total like the ds door did in 2007.
1 hour removing, 1 hour install, 1 hour for everything else.
Lowered glass all the way. Removed door panel. Loosened the front window run track for clearance.
Used silicone spray to aid install. The hd putty knife worked great to push ws into channels without damage.
Worked from back end, around corner to 1/2 way. Fished and slid ws onto run over the glass, then did the front 1/2.
Protected and pinched the end of the w/strip with duct tape to fish it down to the run track by the mirror.
Scraped off dried out grease and re-greased window guide track. Needed 1 new panel tree.
Window operates smoothly and seals tight all the way. Another job done, 20 more to go.

Sawed 2 pieces of 1/2" dia grey electric tube. 22mm long, slit over length.
Pushed them over the lock bolts of the doorlocks.
Now the doors are flush when closed.
And closing sound is bit friendlier.
Little less air noice when driving too.
    Cost: nothing.

Installed door weatherstripping, kick panels and door threshold trim pieces. It’s nice and quiet inside the car now and should not leak.

Not 4 eye, but spent $1.49 on 2 feet of 3/8" inside diameter hose and made new striker bushing for my FSB. Worked perfectly. Thanks, Hans! Still have 1' 11" remaining...

Cobbled up a TV rod connection to a 2150 carb on my Continental. Had just over 0 psi at idle, around 35 at moderate acceleration. Transmission shifted at almost exactly the same speed as my Town Car does. Now that I know the transmission is ok, I'll drill the throttle lever on the carb for a stud at the same distance from the throttle shaft as the (broken) VV that came from the factory.

Now I just have to pry my right eyeball back into alignment with the left one from trying to watch the gauge and the road at the same time.

Something I hope to NEVER have todo again... parking brake cables on an 84 convertible... I don’t know if the strengthening plates on the late models are mounted better, but those things are a PITA...

Also today, new brakes shoes and springs, axle stabilizers and new Hood Release Cable...

    No more rear end rattle...

Next up, power steering hoses and rear wheel bearings...

At the elderly people building where my mother lives, a neighbour of around 75 of age was photografing my mustang.
I drove it to the middle of the street, so he could take more pictures of in and outside.
He told he owned a 3 liter himself once.

    ABSOLUTELY NOTHING!

But I think I am finally done with the majority of the work on the 1986 Bronco I bought a little over a year ago. Still needs some front end work to be completely done, but it drives, stops, turns, and hasn't left me stranded in two weeks of driving. So say HELLO to my new DD until I get my 86 Road Racer finished or my youngest turns 16 which every comes first!

What I started with just over a year ago.

Its a GLC. Great Little Car. Notice how small and narrow the old Bronc is compared to...the New?

They are a lot of fun. Down here, our Right Hand Conversions got the suds-ier Cleveland till late 85, and 216 hp and 316 lb-ft of Cleveland 351 really makes the Bronc Honk!

What do you have under the hood, Trey?

Thanks! The Bronco is a 5.0 EFI with the AOD and 4.11 gears. Has an actual 95K miles and runs pretty well all things considered. I still can't get the poor ole 5.0 to stop leaking oil although much better now than when I started. I have a 351W long rod with GT40 heads that may end up in the engine bay at some point. Fun vehicle to drive. Bought it originally so my wife could take it off road here in CO rather than try to do that with her "SUV" Edge. Will still be used for that on occasion, while still getting DD and then at least for awhile as my 16 year old's driver.
