Default 19 Car Magazines to be Shutdown at the End of the Year

Looks like the end is near for a lot of long time magazines. Like many of you, I haven't subscribed to any magazines this decade, but is is sad to see them go especially ones that have been around for a very long time. Many in the list below I had subscribed to at one point in the past. Some will still publish articles on their websites, but the print versions are gone forever. Only Motor Trend, Hot Rod, and Four Wheeler will remain in print.

    •4-Wheel & Off-Road
    •Automobile
    •Car Craft
    •Chevy High Performance
    •Classic Trucks
    •Diesel Power
    •Hot Rod Deluxe
    •Jp
    •Lowrider
    •Mopar Muscle
    •Muscle Car Review
    •Muscle Mustangs & Fast Fords
    •Mustang Monthly
    •Street Rodder
    •Super Chevy
    •Super Street
    •Truck Trend
    •Truckin’
    •Vette

Its a sad day indeed. Unfortunately the writing has been on the wall for several years now. I used to have subscriptions to many of the magazines listed and even some that aren't. But like so many things the content became less and less every year with more and more ads taking up most of the magazine. Then all the Mustang and Ford magazines focused on nothing but the newest models will little to no mention of Foxes, so my interest began to diminish. Oh well, they say all good things must come to an end.

Car Craft?! That's crazy! Although, like many have said, I haven't subscribed in a long time... That's really a shame.

I used to think that Car Craft was the best car mag out there but that was 30 years ago. I can't remember the last time I held a print copy of a car mag in my hands and I'm sure most of us could make that statement. Thus this announcement is no surprise.

I still have subscriptions to these:
    •Hot Rod
    •Car Craft
    •Chevy High Performance
    •Super Chevy

I've had these at some point:
    •Four Wheeler
    •Super Street
    •Muscle Mustangs & Fast Fords

The magazines are 50-60% ads currently, and over the last 20 years the magazine volumes have shrunk in half (from ~150 pages to ~75-80 pages), but the ad quantity hasn't gone down. The content is always 3-4 months behind. It's hard to compete with a younger faster technology that can do everything you can do. The magazines have legacy only.

As Trey said, writing has been on the wall. But the positive side to this is it'll open up opportunities for other avenues like getting on Youtube, or being on a show exclusive to one of the online channels like Netflix, Hulu, etc. (think of what RoadKill did with the MotorTrend channel). I enjoy watching youtube channels like Basin because I actually learn from them, let's hope most of the folks at these magazines evolve and still create content.

I've had subscriptions to several of those over the years, but not lately.

What I have been doing is going to my local Barnes and Noble every 5-6 weeks and checking out what they had. Anything that had an article I liked, I've bought. I'm gonna miss doing that.

I still have a subscription to Hemmings Muscle Machines

Super Ford was my favorite mag, but it's been almost 20 years since it merged with 5.0 Mustang and 5.0 Mustang and Super Fords is no longer around either.

No big surprise hearing this news. The last one that I had a subscription to was MM&FF. I dropped them a few years back because the content just didn't appeal to me any longer.

The magazines continued to publish more and more about the latest and newest Mustangs with little or no content about the Foxes and the classics. The irony of all of this is that the younger audience that is buying many of the newer Mustangs gets all of their information online. Its the older generations that still read printed material. If the magazines had decent content that interested me and included enough content to help me justify the current prices, I would have probably still subscribed to many of them. The lack of content that interested me and the constantly increasing pages of ads just turned a once several hours of enjoyable reading into many times 30 minutes or so max of entertainment. Just not worth the price of admission. I admit I will miss the magazines as that brings back memories of childhood, teens, and college spending hours, sometimes days looking thru and reading the same articles over and over trying to learn and understand more and more about cars in general. Oh well, life goes on.

Default office computers were promoted to eliminate paper

Will Playboy, Penthouse follow the pattern?. I guess they have not totally dissipated yet.
The internet took over with electronic print and pics.
Just like online shopping has taken a cut into store visits.

Is viewing a foldout online considered porn, subject to harsh penalties?
Mags were and are safer from abuse, temptations, or accidentally going over the legal line. The sleeves over the mag covers.

Checking spelling when composing posts or anything typed online is faster than opening up a dictionary. Plastic vs paper.
I believe it is too time consuming and expensive to publish a mag using the digital way instead of no pc analog way.
There is no option to do it any other way anymore. Computers are great but not for everything.
Another example of computers adding costly steps to the physical part of producing items.
Steps that did not exist prior to, say, 1990. A typewriter did and does fine without an electronic brain to control it.
More and more complexity eats up, and then some, any productivity savings of speed to do the same thing. Cumbersome.
Attempting to use computers to do tasks like publishing that seem to have been done better, faster, and cheaper the simpler way.
What was paper and pencil is now an amazing electronic machine translating those back and forth digital to analog.

    Newer gen may never experience:
One summer, some kids in the neighborhood found a big collection of dirty magazines in the dumpster behind the bowling alley.
So many they had to be immediately divided up quickly all over the neighborhood then hidden and guarded like gold.
Passed around or traded like the little kids traded baseball cards.
From what i remember, the cover, pictures, and hot articles were pulled out and most of the rest discarded.

I guess some of the kid's dads were willing benefactors. Prob caused another type of bonding with the kid before it was a term.
And the opposite in the form of punishment getting caught with the goods.
Once of driving age, the eye candy and tech articles in car mags took their place in time.

I subscribed to many at one time, and bought a lot more at the store.

I firmly believe the market is still there but they were just way too fragmented and dollar spend minded to sustain anything.

I miss the days where you would see feature cars that were different but done on a budget. Junkyard horsepower articles, etc.

We will look back at the days when all of the go fast parts we have enjoyed were off the shelf and wish for some solutions down the road.

I have a vast collection of mine and my dads magazines dating back nearly 40 years.

Was fun while it lasted I guess.
