Default Supplies for heater core replacement (w/AC)?

With colder weather finally arriving in Houston, I need to replace my heater core. I’ve been living without it for the last few years, but would like to drive the car this winter on dry cold days.

I have a Motorcraft core and a new restrictor somewhere. I need to dig up some of the instructions that I’ve seen here on FEP. I seem to recall some good comments from homer302, the guy who can replace heater cores before breakfast.

I seem to recall some comments about using butyl tape to seal up the HVAC box. Any recommendations? What size tape? I’m finding 1” wide tape, which is too wide. Does it come in 1/4” rope?

Any other suggestions for materials that I should buy in preparation?

The 3M Windo Weld is probably your best option. Its available in several sizes that will work just fine. Generally 1/4" is what I use for the heater core box.

Good thing you have a heater core. The Ford and Motorcraft ones have disappeared. I had my last one recored which is also an option. Don’t toss your old one.

Kevin, thanks for that comment. I’ll save the old core.

I paid $200 to have my old one recored. While it may sound expensive, the Motorcraft ones were hitting over $125. So it’s not much more than a rare NOS part would be. The only trick is to have a spare on hand so you don’t have to wait a few days for the recore.
