Default Idiots at Scott Drake and Dashes Direct??

Wanted a Regatta Blue dash pad for the McLaren. The only listing I could find anywhere was a Jegs eBay listing:

    Attachment 129604

It took four weeks from payment to delivery (shipped directly from Drake), so I assume that it was made after purchase. The color is deplorable:

    (Natural light):

    Attachment 129605

    (Overhead neon lighting):

    Attachment 129606

Oh, an expanded detail from the first pic (nice trim job, Jack):

    Attachment 129607

It's obviously going back. What options does this leave me?

I have an 82 RS with the Wedgewood Blue interior and my buddy has an 86 SSP with the Regatta Blue interior. We just went thru this same issue on his SSP. He ordered one of the Dashes Direct pads in blue. I will say the DD pad was close to his Regatta Blue color, but again not a perfect match by any stretch.

Pictures always alter actual colors, so hard to be certain, but your dash pad looks closer to my Wedgewood blue than the Regatta Blue from my experience. I agree the edge definitely looks terrible and I am constantly amazed at some of the stuff that manufacturers feel is acceptable these days. The other issue is that once again a manufacturer shows one part number for the 79-86 Foxes with blue interior when there were two different blue interiors available in that time span.

Your dash color looks pretty similar to the Regatta blue in my experience, but I will also state that over the years I have noticed that all of the Fox interiors can vary greatly in regards to color. The color from piece to piece in the same vehicle will also vary depending on material and if it was painted, dyed, or molded in color.

My personal opinion is that no matter who's dash pad you end up with, your best bet will be to respray it to match. Had to do the exact same thing for Erratic50's Saleen clone even though I would say the charcoal dash pad color was close. It was still off just enough that it was noticeable (at least to me )

When redoing any Fox interiors these days, I buy enough interior paint to respray/dye every hard plastic part in the car. If you are a concourse restoration kind of owner, that may not be your preference, but in my opinion it makes the interior look much better overall. Good Luck!

Ah! Early Wedgewood Blue versus late Regatta Blue. Looks like an egregious error in Jegs' listing.

Dashes Direct says "DO NOT attempt to paint this dash pad as most paints will not adhere." Anyone successfully painted one of these or will I have to buy a paintable black pad?

Looks pretty much like the same issues that I posted on replacing the red dash on my 84 about year ago. I must say the red was much better overall. I also noted of the warning not to paint it.

I’m not sure if the black version is paintable.

FWIW: the description of the black dash pad on lmr.com says, in part, "This extremely nice replacement Mustang dash pad is available in black, but can also be painted to match your interior if you have a different color."

I painted an original pad that had sun damage. Turned out great. I wonder why you can't paint the replacement pad?

I have seen the warnings on some of the dash pads in regards to painting. I can say that I have painted at least 3 Dashes Direct pads at this point none of them were black but, blue, grey, and red. Haven't had an issue with a single one to this point. I do use MEK or MEK Replacement cleaner to make sure I get all the mold agent, etc. off the dash pads before painting. I use Bull Dog adhesion Promoter and either SEM or PPG interior paint. I haven't had one of the color dashes match colorwise even when they are supposedly "the correct color". Maybe I am too picky or just see colors better than some, but all of them so far have been off when I pull them out of the box. So I respray them with the same paint as the dash or at least have paint mixed that matches the dash so they look good.

    Thanks,Trey. Good advice.

How much paint is needed ? A pint? Or would you use rattle can?

It doesn't take much paint when respraying the same basic color so Yes a pint would definitely do it if buying PPG or shop mixed SEM. I have had good luck with the SEM paint from National Parts Depot in regards to color matching. The LMR paint used to be pretty good, but haven't been as happy with the results as of late nor the coverage.

When restoring an interior I will often buy 1-2 quarts of sprayable paint for the interior color and respray everything in the interior with the only exception being the door panels unless they are in terrible shape. This makes everything the same color and really gives that fresh new POP to the interior. If just doing the dash and/or dash pad I would use the NPD rattle can. Again prep and cleaning is the key to making the paint stick and look good. Good Luck!

How much work/money was involved in this? Would you recommend it?

I just re-dyed the interior on my '89 convertible. I used 2 1/2 cans of SEM Napa Red, and about a 1/2 can of SEM Landau Black. Each can is ~$18.50 ea. That was covering everything in the same color, you may need more "paint" if you are changing colors.

The real "cost" to this is time. To do it right, you need to take everything apart and clean it thoroughly. I used rubbing alcohol as the last wipe down before paint, to remove any remaining contamination.
