NO! The T5 shifter will come up thru the same opening in the floor. Many will enlarge the hole to make it easier to remove/install the shifter assembly of the T5, but otherwise your current setup will work just fine.

I have done the swap exactly as mentioned above and I have also done the swap by enlarging the opening and then using the T5 transmission tunnel hump of the later models to improve the fit and seal with the later model style shifter boot rather than the original 4 speed setup. Good Luck!

This thread doesn’t belong on the non-FEP tech

if I wanted to swap a 6-speed automatic into my 2008 Linclon Mark LT that would be a non-FEP tech discussion

    Fixed!

I clicked on the main Forum page and hadn't noticed which specific section it was in.

I enlarged the hole in my '80 to add a later model T-5 and fit the shifter cover over.

Also enlarged the trans hole. Car is a 79 that had a RAD 4 speed. Installed a 92 T-5.
Front T-5 shifter bolts wind up under the tunnel sheet metal on a 4 speed car.
No big deal until removing T-5 shifter assy after T-5 is installed in car.
Adding a trans tunnel plate would clean up the hole for correct boot seal. Lot of heat comes up thru there.
