Default 1979 Mecury Capri Temperature Gauge Sending Location

I'm new to these engines so please forgive me..

We have a 2.8L 1979 Mecury Capri and the temp gauge is aftermarket and the wires are not connected. I do not see where to connect the sender wire from our gauge cluster. Can anyone show in a picture where it is located?

If you have an aftermarket gauge then I would expect it to be wired directly to the aftermarket sending unit. The factory wiring would not be used.

I think I found a sending unit near the water pump, would this not function the same with an aftermarket VDO gauge as the original in the cluster? It seems the unit just connects to a single wire from a pole mounted connection.

The sending unit must be for the after market gauge. The stock sender will not be correct for the new gauge. They have to be a matched set. You can use the stock wires to hook up the new gauge, but the stock sender has to be change to match the new gauge.
