On my os RS Micronta dwell tach, black is ground, red goes to coil, tach terminal (+).
Car has a round coil, horseshoe style connector.
I insert a nail or something metal into the connector gap for the meter's + red gator clip.
(-) black clip to car ground.
More info can be found searching for a copy of the instructions online for the meter's model number.
Worked for me very recently. Forgot the codes.

As long as it doesn't have an MSD or similar you should be ok.

With the TFI coil, you might have to make some jumper wires to connect your meter.

But my question is do I connect the pos. wire of the meter to the green wire on the coil and the neg. wire on meter to chassis ground?

If the green wire is the coil +, then yes it should be good to go. Black to ground.
