    Default tach and speedometer

I am getting ready to do the remove the dash, replace the header core and air conditioning condenser in my 85 gt, when I noticed my car has an 7000 rpm tach and a 140mph speedometer that look to be original.. the mileage on the odometer shows only 8600 miles so I know that its not original......was this a factory or dealer installed option at some point after the car was built in March 1985. any information would be helpful......thanks

The 140 speedo was not a factory option but available thru Ford parts counter. It takes about an hour to install by removing the cluster.

The 140 speedometer was not a factory option in the GT, but was standard in any SSP Mustang. As stated was available over the counter Ford dealerships and thru other Motorsport vendors of the day.

Some dealerships did install the 140 MPH speedometer on the lot to help with sales. so there's no guarantee how or when the unit was installed. Obviously the odds are that with only 8600 miles on the odometer the speedometer probably wasn't installed back in 1985.
