    Default 351w block questions

    Might pick up a 351w block that is fresh from shop from being cleaned. Owner told me its a 74. Anything to look for before I buy. I know you will never know if its ok till machine shop checks but just wondering if there is any spots that have common issues to look for. Like the 93+ blocks that crack by the oil passages.

    I am not aware of any specific issues with the early 351W. I am sure like all engines there are some areas of more concern than others, but overall I don't recall there being any Major concerns in regards to durability. Good Luck!

    1969 and 1970 have a .020" shorter deck height, piston selection can be trickier, or use a thicker head gasket. Won't be an issue with a 1974 block though.

    Just a thought-
    Not sure when the SBF went to a block mounted oil dipstick. The early ones were in the timing cover so if you swap it in to a Fox body that needs a rear sump pan you will need to address that. I am putting a '70 302 block in my Granada. Going to cut a hole in the side of the pan and use a 7.3 diesel dip stick adapter/tube.
    83 5.0 GT. Quicker than it looks! 10:1 (or just over) 306, Motorsport a332 cam, 140A alt, t5 conv, 8.8 w/ 3.27's, Edel rpm, alum rad, very worked e7's, Holley SA carb, etc... SOLD IT!!!!

    Now an 1981 Granada! .040 over 302, Edel E-street heads... Currently building a 347 because, why not?

    An aftermarket pan will have a dipstick provision.
