Default Power Window Conversion, 79 Mustang Doors

Over the winter, I picked up a pair of Mustang power window regulators and purchased new motors. I was also able to score the entire door harnesses and door jamb boots from an 85 LTD. Since new pigtails for the motors run about $30 each, the harness give me the needed plugs and wiring that I need for the door.

Looking window mechanism for the door in my 79, I noticed the window mount and regulator track is a heavy plastic, not the metal ones that I have seen in other Mustangs. The regulator looks like it is the same as other manual ones that I have seen. Does anyone know if this window mount in my door will work with the power regulators? Since power windows were not an option until '81, the only images that I can find are with metal one.

Here is what it looks like.

I ran into the same thing with my Zephyr. I believe the plastic and metal ones are interchangeable. I'd recommend finding yourself some metal ones anyway though because the plastic ones break, stretch out, and other bad things.

Wow, never seen plastic ones! That's kind of scary, but then again I guess not since they are still there after 40 years. You must daily drive this. That's the only reason I could imagine for changing over a system that's functioned for 40 years for one that is well known to be troublesome and a PITA to repair. But that's what makes the world go around. To each their own. You should document this process with pictures throughout for the next guy who comes along. Good Luck.

The plastic one will work just fine.
One of mine broke and I replaced it with a metal one.
We discussed why if you can, you should do it at this post.

    I keep a spare regulator.
Nothing like one breaking on a 90 degree day drive in the up position and no a/c.
Or suddenly stuck down on a rainy or cold day drive..

Thanks for the info. I guess the bonus with plastic ones is not needing the guide bushings... until the 40 yo plastic breaks.

Its' been several years since this was a daily. Unfortunately, it hasn't seen the road in 3 years. It's been my toy since 2007. I am finally getting some time to do some things that I want to do to the car. Power windows is one of those things. With my shoulder getting worse over the years, it makes cranking down the window a little difficult.

I do plan on photo documenting it, like I did with my sequential tail lights, and hopefully post it up here.
