    Default Crankshaft Key Removal

So my crankshaft key got kinda beat up during the cam sprocket incident (don't ask) and my new bolt kit came with a new one, so I'd like to replace it. Problem is, it's really stuck. I've been trying to tap a little screwdriver under the front side, but the only thing I've succeeded in doing is messing up the key worse.

Some heat to the crankshaft snout avoiding the keyway as much as possible might help to loosen it up. You could also try some heat on the crankshaft and then hit the key with some cold spray to help break it loose.

    Grr! I finally got it.

I couldn't really get it to pry upwards in the spot it was in, heat or not, so i ended up pounding it down and forward from the very back of it with a punch. Sometimes I really think this hobby requires a certain instinct/magic touch that I just don't have!

For me there have been plenty of times that I will start getting frustrated I just stop, go get a drink and relax for a couple of moments. Its amazing how things sort themselves out after you have a mental break!!

Oh, absolutely. I like to walk away pretty regularly. Probably wouldn't fly in a dealership service department.

I have fought with things for hours before, to quit and walk away. Come back later and things just magically happen with ease. It really is crazy.

    There, I fixed your post.

Ya gotta bring the tools of destruction to the site so the parts can see that you aren't taking any crap from them. Then they'll surrender.

I realize it is after the fact, but could you have tapped it and used a screw to pull it out?

Yeah, I did think of that. Most videos I found online about stubborn keys recommended welding something to it and prying on that. I don't weld, so that wasn't happening, but getting a screw in there would be the next best thing. I was pretty apprehensive about mutilating the key TOO much though because I wasn't sure I'd be able to even get it out, and it was SORT OF usable despite the damage I'd done to it so far. That's why I didn't try the screw thing sooner.
