Default 88 cougar tach speedo question

88 cougar 5.0 with 5spd had to put a new computer in

Stock tach is dead and speedometer is not working are mustang parts interchangeable at all?
Not sure if it’s a speed sensor or how to diagnose.

I assume you have the analog dash. No, they aren't interchangeable with anything else that I know of, except thunderbird, obviously.

Everything worked before the computer swap?

I suspect the cable is the same, but the gauge wont fit in the dash without modifications. You may be able to make it work though.

Why did you switch the computer?

If your able to switch the computer back, and see if they operate then.

I'm unsure. I'm thinking the Cougar might not be cable driven speedo?? Why would it stop if it was?

May try these guys with the question. foxtbirdcougarforums.com

There is no Speedo cable. The Speedo uses the vss in the transmission. All you have to do is swap the old one from the aod to the t-5. The gear tooth count and style is different between auto and manual trans though.

Unless you have done some pretty significant upgrades, not only is mass air pointless, but it won't run right. A mustang uses 19# injectors and a completely different firing order as well as camshaft. It might run, but it will run like cap. If its a stock engine, 100% a waste of time.

    Any ideas on tach?
Or is it better to use a aftermarket?

Tach wiring is pretty much identicle to mustang of the same year. And yes, the vss is the vehicle speed sensor. It is a two wire plug on the drivers side rear of the transmission.

Usually when there are guage problems, it can be attributed to the ignition switch. The cougar birds have a much higher level of switched electronics and luxury features then a lot of other fird products of the time.

Because of this increased load, its pretty usual for the stock ignition switch wiring to be chewed up or melted. I would first check all fuses, then try the ignition switch.

The vss is the exact same unit as what is in a mustang.
