Thread: Hydroblasting

Has anyone had this done? I have been using a scraper and a wire wheel and very painfully and slowly been scraping away the tar like undercoat that was sprayed all over the engine bay and then grinding the rust spots down to metal and coating them. I thought to myself "we live in the future there has to be a better way" and started looking into it. I found a local company and they claim not only can they blast away all the rust but they can probably completely remove all the tar-like undercoat and it would be relatively inexpensive (and they're mobile)... Thoughts? Experiences?

I personally have not had it done, but I know a few that have. As with any service the operator will determine the overall quality and success. In general it a great way to clean up old rusty, crusty, and nasty vehicles, parts, etc.

There are different systems, some that use baking soda that generally will not remove rust, scale, etc. but also doesn't damage glass, chrome, and even most rubber parts.

The other systems will use glass bead, plastic beads, and even some other media to remove paint, rust, scale, bondo, etc. Just really depends on what you need to have cleaned up. Talk with the company and get a rough estimate and just make sure you tell them what you need or expect from the process and you should be just fine. Definitely beats scraping, grinding, etc. by hand. Good Luck!

Crushed glass works wonders BUT makes a HUGE mess and is very hard to remove the spent glass from the car's nooks and crannies. You will get some left overs in your primer/paint. It's really a trade off.
