    Default 1985 gt 5.0 cfi/aod firing order

got a weird one. we own a pair of 85 gt verts with cfi/aod both are bone stock engines have never been opened before now. they are both flat tappet engines with flat tappet cams of course but are factory stock. here's the weird part, one car has flat tappet firing order and the other has roller firing order. I don't know what to make of this. did for put 351 cams in some engines? this has me stumped

Never heard of a flat tappet firing order, just 302 vs 351. My 84 had the 351 order and still does with the new cam. I wonder if your oddball blew up and the repair was a non ho?

It isn't untouched. Someone has been in it and replaced the cam or whole engine. It should have the HO firing order.

Ford used roller cams in everything after the mid-to-late 1980s, but most were still non-H.O. and therefore still 15426378 firing order. In other words, there were roller cams with what you call "flat tappet" firing order. So calling the 15426378 firing order "flat tappet" is not an appropriate label.

Older 302 and (newer) S.O. 5.0L had one firing order (1-5-4-2-6-3-7-8)
    351W and H.O. 5.0L had another firing order (1-3-7-2-6-5-4-8)

The only reason H.O. 5.0L engines have the 13726548 firing order is because the H.O. cam in 1982 was from a 4V 351W engine originally engineered for a 1973 Torino (D3OE-6250-AA). Ford kept that cam in service through 1985 (AOD only) in the Mustang and Capri, and ever used it later in 1993 through 1995 in the F-150 Lightning SVT. Ford went to roller cam in 1985 H.O. (4V only) and kept the 13726548 firing order.
