I believe, technically, you're supposed to use a new gear any time you install a new cam. The style of gear depends on the cam manufacturer. Typically, a steel gear for hydraulic roller cam...flat tappet gets an iron gear. You can use a bronze gear with either one, iirc. The downside is that you would need to check it periodically for wear. A composite gear is also supposed to be compatible with any cam, but without the wear issues. They do cost more, though.
This is what I've learned. Someone may chime in and correct me if I got anything wrong.
