My 85 GT's reclining mechanism is bad. Anyone know what years are compatible? I hear 83-93 is compatible even though the seat back heights are different. Ideally I'd like to source as new a mechanism as possible.

Where you located? I have 2 sets of extra seats i will not use and am in troy, Ohio. You can have a whole seat for free if you can pick it up. they all worked when I took them out and have been up in the top of the garage. I have a 1984.

Ford introduced the "Sport Performance" seat in the Mustang in 1983. They also introduced pretty much the same seat (albeit with slight differences) in other Ford/Mercury/Lincoln cars at the same time. This seat carried on, again with slight changes, throughout the run of the Fox body Mustang.
The Ford part numbers for the seat latch mechanism are;
Drivers side: E3SZ 6362649-E (replaced by E7ZZ 6162649-A)
Passenger Side: E3SZ 6362648-E (replaced by E7ZZ 6162648-A)
From what I can see in my parts listing, the same latches were used on the following cars;
Escort 1983
Tempo/Topaz 1984-1986
EXP/LN7 1983
These are the cars/years that share the same exact part number. Now as I said, Ford used pretty much the same seat (maybe different foam inserts/headrests) along multiple car lines in different years. I had a 1987 Ford Escort GT that had almost the same seat that my 83 Mustang GT had in it. But the part numbers for the 87 Escort seat latches are different. Would they still work? I can't answer that question. Probably so. Ford had a habit of assigning different part numbers to the same part for different vehicles. Case in point is the 83 model year latch part numbers for the Mustang and Capris start with an "E3SZ" prefix, which is the prefix assigned to Thunderbirds/Cougars. But the Thunderbird part number for the seat latches for the 83 model year are different.
Your best bet would be to keep a watch on Ebay for a seat latch that looks the same. If you need a picture of the latches, let me know. I have some 85/86 SVO seats that are apart and I can take pictures of the driver and passenger side latches for you.
If they take my stapler, then I'll set the building on fire...

Thanks tbirdman. I have a "line" on a reclining mechanism but without confirmation I'll pass on the $85 eBay "deal". I'll just bide my time and grab something locally for cheap and test it. Thanks for the detail!

Had my hands on an 86 seat today which I was all excited about but turns out it has exactly the same damn problem. Any real pressure on the seat back and the first recline position fails and it pops to the next setting. I’m guessing there is a rounded notch in the mechanism. I wonder if it can be fixed? I’m also going to start looking at aftermarket hinges that can be adapted with some kind of interface plate welded on

2001 Explorer hinges look extremely similar. If the holes don’t line up they could be plug welded and re-drilled. I’d post a linked pic but this site says I’m over my quota
