Default 86 GT convertible rear speakers

I'm looking for some guidance on the rear speakers in my 86 GT convertible. The car came with the standard AM/FM cassette player stereo. I know there's speakers mounted under the carpet in the side walls in the back seat area, right next to where your legs would rest if you were sitting back there. Crutchfield says there's nothing that will fit there. Does anyone have any guidance for me?

    Cheers,
    Joe

I did some digging and am seeing mixed opinions on them being 6.5's or 6x8's. One person reported managing to cram 6x9's in.

I had a pair of 6.5" Kicker CS series speakers in my old door panels, that I just removed. If I find time in the next week or two I want to tear into the interior and see if I can make those fit back there. I can let you know if they work, or why they don't when I get there.

Over time I have also heard plenty of people complaining about the carpet muffling the sound. Would have to wonder about cutting the backing, or something like that?

Thanks for your reply Glide Thunder. Let me know what you find out. I'll probably just end up putting hi quality speakers in the doors & dash, if anything at all. Right now, the car is 100% stock. I'm torn between leaving it that way and hacking away at it.

Will do. I didn't mind having speakers in my doors, but the implementation the PO of my car did was terrible. He hacked giant holes in the door panels, and doors, and then made speaker pods that went over the door. These pods went the whole length of the door, and were held on with nothing but 3 drywall screws straight into metal. Needless to say for the 3 years I left them there I had to deal with them falling off quite often.

I finally gave up and installed new TMI door panels. For me, if I can get my 6.5"s back in my car without hacking up another set of door panels, I will be happy. I kinda like not needing to look at the speakers all the time, and am appreciating the extra leg room. Huge improvement on long road trips.

Picture I took right after we took out the tan 86GT halo seats and transferred their mounting hardware over to the 1992/1993 leather seats.

The pods look nice. Especially if you consider the shape of the bottoms on those abused tan door panels the PO had put to black. The big holes he cut were for 6x9’s but 6x9’s dont clear the glass ..... idiot.....

The huge 6x9 holes stayed hidden behind the structure of the pods

Pods are not for tall people. The trip home from Florida with those pods intruding on our leg room sucked. It made me wish we had my 86 instead, that’s for sure!

Will have to play with 6” speakers under the seats after you get the rear speakers going

I've been very happy with the appearance of these speakers in the doors. They almost look like they belong there.

Smitty54: Those look great, really clean look. What did you do in the back? Did you just leave the stock speakers in the back?

I just left the stock speakers in the rear. They sound ok, though muffled. I put tweeters in the dash. These are Rockford Fosgate and when people see them in the door, they think they're stock.

No worries, there was some metal cutting involved in the doors..
I still have the speakers, I put in some old crap ones when I sold it, dang thingscost me well over 200 bucks so had to keep them.

I also remember some one usung just the door grills from a aero fox as a cover for the door speakers. It looked really clean too.

Here are some more pictures of what I had. I can tell you these pods are the reason my girlfriend thought fox body mustangs have zero leg room

Ordered them intending on cutting them up and adding speakers "correctly", but once I saw them I just couldn't bring myself to cutting them. And honestly I prefer the way they look w/o speakers.

Done mods on every ride here. Leave the resto worry's to any future owners.
Save them some work and can be a selling point if done right.

Am thinking of moving two 90's Ford Mach 6x8s in rear 1/4, hip low by the seat cushion (hatchback).
Have 6 back there now. 4 loose, 2 in stock loc. They have sealed back protection for install in doors.
Then enlarge rear stock loc from one hole per side to two with double factory grills side by side.
Two 6x8 were not enough. The panel plastic has started to go south due to age anyway.
Six 6x8 speakers finally provide nice bass back there. Passed my sound trials. Now to make it pretty.
Loose large boom cabinet would take up too much room i need for tools. Spare tire stays.

Modding for better stereo sound in cars has always been very popular.
Don't miss out because of looks. Of course, hacked up install is not acceptable.
Make them blend in by color matching the grills to trim color. Or show off.

Could always reverse hole cuts in doors.
Carpet area holes can be reversed with metal and new carpet if change of plan.
No cut surface mount modules, pods, are available for shallow depth speakers.
Carpet nap would cover any screw holes if removed or re positioned later.

Small portable speaker box enclosures, on rear seat floor, are another option. Use your speakers in them.
I use a couple 6x9 size from time to time. With long wires, can use outside of car or re/moved for passengers.

If plastic trim panels are less than show new, cut and enjoy. The additional mod look usually wears off if intended so.
Use factory grills and no one will really notice. Tell them it was factory or dealer option.
Carefully planned install can actually can enhance the looks, like a hood scoop suggests power.

Spray them to match the carpet?

Well I had 3 homework assignments, 2 papers due, one pointless exam and a partridge in a pear tree today. But I finally got to tear into the car and get my speakers in.

I can now confirm they are 6.5" holes. These CS series Kickers fit just fine.

Honestly, having heard these same speakers in the doors, and the rear quarters, I no longer see a purpose in running door speakers INSTEAD of these. Previously, all my highs and mids came from the front, and the lows came from the trunk, and it was a little strange... This is no longer the case.

I was worried about the speakers sounding muffled, but they are not muffled whatsoever. Overall I am very happy with this result. (I also dont really like looking at speakers).

The PO of my car lived by these words. Everyone, for the love of God, please try to make any modifications you do as reversible as possible. I have spent the last 3 years of my life trying to unf*ck everything the PO did, that at face value didnt seem too bad. (And then you take the pods off and find holes in your door big enough to fit both fists.....)

IMHO, in 95% of cases, the factory speaker locations are more than enough, especially in a Mustang convertible of all places. The only thing I would consider adding at this point, is making some sort of enclosure that hugs the rear armrest by the window, and basically fills in that space by the window switch. I bet a person could fit a pair of 6x9's there if they were careful.
