I can see how that thing could cause big problems. It is AFTER the meter. I know very well you don't want to mess with metered air. I had a couple of Escort GTs ('91 and '93). Those were prone to developing rips in the rubber intake tube.

Looks just like I remember. They strangle the airflow going to the air filter at WOT
For better sound quality add a turbo.

Theres not THAT much difference in sound but it does pick up power
Progress! We have the Cobra computer and MAF installed (on the old engine)! Seems happy enough at this point, but I just need it to be able to drive me around enough to test my brake and cruise repairs. Then the old engine gets yanked!
Pretty sure I've decided on Moates stuff for tuning. The Quarterhorse costs about the same as the SCT chip, and has way more capabilities. I know there's a little more to buy, but it gives me more flexibility going forward.

If I am currently running SD (DA1) on my 86 EFI, do I need anything else than the Megasquirt kit? Does that allow me to skip the mass air conversion? I just put on Edelbrock intake and GT40P heads and not sure the stock CPU has the correct tables. Bogs from 2k to 3k + throttle response a little off.

Look up BREW2L on youtube. He just put a Megasquirt on his. I can't imagine why you would need to do a mass air conversion on that setup.
I'm second guessing things on mine. I kind of feel like I need to jump on this hot market for the Cobra computers in case it goes away. I hate selling things though. I haven't bought the Moates stuff yet. Damn. We'll see when it gets closer to spring.

I know this is a bit old but another method would have been using an A9L and loading the X3Z bin into the QuarterHorse to start from.

Yeah, there was certainly a lot I didn't know when I started this process. And a lot left to be learned. This whole deal is on hold until I work out the rest of the kinks from my engine and clutch install. The engine didn't seem to want to run right with the combination of electronics I'd assembled. Current theory is, I had the wrong MAF sensor in the 70mm housing. I replaced it with a reman Cobra MAF, but I can't start the engine until I get the clutch-terf**k worked out. I know it's going to be tuned anyway, but I'd like to start with a foundation that works relatively well before we crack into the ECU. That's why I went with the X3Z and Cobra MAF to begin with, after all.
