Perfect weather day for outdoor car repair.
Top bracket bolt came off fine. Bottom bracket bolt snapped quickly.
Removed old cooler to use as template for new one. No reuse of brackets.
Fabbed new power steering cooler line.
Old one is about 65" long. Had to cheat. Next time, maybe will go 72".
PAX 660 PVF 3/8" x 5' brake line from AZ. Nearby Meijer had type F deal: buy 2 get 3rd free.
Installed new cooler, top clamp, flushed, added ps filter, filled.
Idle, no leaks, noise.
Test drive.
Done. Parked in drive.
Oh oh. Drips on drive, hoses, and areas below pump wet with ATF.
Of course, one thinks "now what?"
Forgot to put the ps reservoir cap back on.

got my 8.8 ready to swap in for the 7.5.
My boy doesn't know how to drive a standard, so I took him out in my car to teach him. After a few stalls he did pretty good. Going to go out tomorrow again and he'll get the hang of it.
Find an old '40's ford pickup with a crash box so you can teach him right. The world has been going downhill since they invented synchromesh.

got the under hood area painted and front suspension and engine stuck in it
Finally repaired NLA 80's era black Hurst shifter ball.
Universal knob kit with interchangable threaded adapter inserts to fit all shifter thread sizes.
Years ago cracked a little chunk out of it prying out the stuck removable threaded insert section.
Top lens removes to change shift patterns or logos. Epoxy, sand, black touch up paint. Like new again.
Reinstalled in place of regular white one from the 60's.
Getting an aftermarket drivers seat just right is not easy, but important for best car control, visibility and comfort.
Seat position sat too low, almost 6" lower than stock. Racy, but hard to get out of the 'hole'. Much easier now.
Reslotted seat track holes 1/4", raised rear seat track 2.5" off floor pan. No mod to ft track height.
Seat is level side to side. R/L edges of seat back are square and even distance from dash.
Bottom cushion is about 2" lower than ps stock low back bucket bottom cushion. Fine
4 fingers width head to headliner. Stock is 2 fingers. Stock seats are kind of high up.
With arms level, elbows touching seat back bolster, can hook thumbs on sport wheel spokes.
Or rest right hand on shifter knob in 2nd/4th with elbow still touching rt seat back bolster.
Console pad is now at right height again like with stock seats. Plenty of elbow clearance when shifting.
Left arm is level on door window sill.
Turning steering wheel hand over hand much better.
Foot rest, pedals, finally at the right distance and leg angle for me.

We're not fast racers, we're more what's known as half fast racers.
Went for a afternoon to evening ride. Finally warm out for windows down driving.
Nice 80 degree day and 80 mile day. Cruised Fort Street, official day is one month away.
10 or so shopping list stops, south and downriver part of town. Test drive of recent repairs ok.
Brief gusty rainstorm, dried up. Windows down again. Have no a/c.
Ran fine. Sort of retraced route when brake line broke few weeks ago.
New seat mount position and vg salvaged hatch rubber seal working fine.
Got tired of fumes and rattles. Weatherstrip had been sitting in shed since last year.
Seen:
Noticed a lot of 2000 era Mustangs out. Wondered where ours were. Or even older ones.
Then at my last stop of day, seen a sharp shiny black Mustang hatchback 1980 302/auto in Kroger parking lot.
Employee. She locked her keys in. They finally got the door open, no damage.
The comment was "What a way to start the Memorial holiday."

Fixed RTFT speaker wires. They came loose somehow at the amp output.
Then drove to two free car shows as spectator. Perfect weather day.
Got coney and A&W root beer float.
Last show was Roush Open House & Cruise-in.

Pretty neat show. I would like to visit the Roush museum someday.
Installed C/C plates in the Fairmont.

Did this last Wednesday. ATT internet was down since then. 6 days. Yah fast service? Not for repairs.
Needed to be able to remove scoop at will for upcoming trial of new Holley carb/air cleaner clearance.
A chance to fix hood paint rust spots and install ss hanger bolts, washers, and flange nuts to remount scoop.
The 3 rear factory studs were not gripping the scoop anymore. Rusted away. Removed them.
Same ones are used front of fender/bumper. A bitch to remove if they strip.
Zinc hanger bolts have been working fine in the front part of scoop and not rusting.
1/4" and 5/16". 1/4" dia when scoop screw boss is good, 5/16" when boss is not.
2" size was used. Rear studs need to be cut down at the screw end to about 1/2".
Body- repaint, flaw and rust repairs ongoing. Black shows everything.
Replaced two ds door panel trees, bottom rear corner.
When they strip, the door panel was catching on door weatherstrip.

Finally 90's here in Metro Detroit. Rainy this year. Marauding rain storms predicted every day.
Holley 5200 carbs are not made anymore. New are rare, replacements are remans.
Decided long ago to adapt a Holley 2300 series 2bbl to my 2.3T. Much better for parts sourcing.
One year of trial fitting, calibrations, research, planning, wondering, guessing, hoping -done.
Can report success.
No rain was correctly predicted all day. Driveway work. Waited till 6 pm. Done at 10p.
Felt dexterous, adventurous, in the mood, and fairly alert after a pot of coffee.
Staged tools, 2nd carb assy, fasteners, fender cover, rags, etc.
Removed the 5200 carb and reinstalled larger Holley carb assy yesterday. 45 minutes.
This time was 'go for launch'. "..Light this candle".
Had multiple fire bottles and wet towel close by.
Cranked engine. Once fuel bowl filled, engine started quick and idled perfectly like the 5200 did.
Same rpm and vac reading. Choke flaps open, are not connected. Did not adjust a thing.
Engine was cold but idle was stable, quickly exited running car to check. No leaks.
Quick restarts. Was totally elated.
Planned on spending much time getting new carb to work but its already there.
Decided to go around block once engine was warmed up. Took off scoop, installed air cleaner.
Air cleaner wont clear with scoop on. 1/2-3/4 too tall. Clearance is fine with no air cleaner
Around the block turned into 8 mile test ride 50 mph tops.
Idle to 5000 and into 3# boost. Ok no issues. Smooth. No black smoke, flats, buck, ping, erratic operation.
No changes to engine tune were or will be done.
Carb is modified so the pv is boost referenced for the turbo. Using the same vac line, ck valve, tube as with the 5200.
Copied the same jetting and pv numbers as in the 5200 to the bigger carb as a start. Close enough for now.
Revs a bit quicker and freely. Fuel use seems normal.
Did set the fuel level and check the idle mix today. Remembered to stuff a shop rag to catch sight plug if dropped.
Have not done a center pivot float adj since 1973. Used same old stubby wide screwdriver and box wrench!
Now to solve the a/c scoop clearance issue, add choke assy, maybe a wide band A/F gauge to be safe.
Saturday- solved the taller carb and air cleaner to stock Cobra scoop clearance issue.
Flipped and notched aftermarket air cleaner base. Gained 1/2"+.
Used playdoh on top of ac lid to check, scoop not bolted down to be safe.
Found hood would now close with scoop bolted down.
Filed 6" of molded rib, under side of scoop, that was close to rubbing front of a/c.
Both mods resulted in 1/2" -3/4" total scoop clearance.
Good to go. Glad the hood has the factory cut out.
Buttoned everything up. Decided to chance a 30 mile evening drive later to a large car cruise.
First time out that far from home with new carb. Had the old one along to insure ride home.
Stopped every now and then to check under hood for issues. Leaks, etc. None.
Ran great. Traffic, xway, cruising, idle, vac reading. Temp ran at N to O the usual IVR cycling..
Total 130 mile round trip test. Got mid 20's average mpg from the 2.3T.
Today Sunday did another cross town drive. ok.
Was still kind of hard to throttle off idle to 1100-1400. Rev to 1500+ rpm to clutch out ok.
Greased the dry new throttle ball.
Then ds door would not latch. Darn lower door pin keeps working its way up. Tapped back down, door closes fine again.

The memory of that Tuesday 7/8/80. Traded in one car, bought the Cobra.
A full day even before going to work in aft.
Was a nice hazy sky day 84 degrees, exact same weather as today.
One, if not the best, impulse purchases i ever made to date. For sure as a 28 year old.
Many miles. Cruises, Ford test track, MIS Speedway, Milan Dragway, GM Proving Grounds, 2 week NYC vac.
Never feel too old to be seen in it.
Always a treat to drive it to work and back. Makes one quickly forget work outside of work.
Now totally enjoy driving it all day or short blast to the store.
Drove it every day in the 80's. Still a reliable daily driver type car, drives fine.
Kept same stock look. Had to add pc spoiler, fog lights, hood pins, turbine wheels.
Mods, repairs, done to correct deficiencies, durability, or improve the fun.
Recent Holley carb retrofit is resulting with mid 20's mpg hiway, 20 city and a bit more umph.
Never hate to work or wisely spend money on it. Always needs something.
