Default 28 vs 50oz harmonic balancer and flywheel/ flexplate

I know that Ford changed from a 28 oz balancing system to a 50 oz but, can you, as long as you use compatable balancers and flex plate/ flywheel, can you transfer them from engine to engine. Example as being, taking a harmonic balancer and flywheel from a 1985 302 HO and put it on a 1982 302, without issues? Thanks for your time.

The 1982 302 should be a 50 oz imbalance, so there should be no issues other than verifying that your timing marks are correct.

Ford used the 28 oz up till 1981 with the 302. then 82 and up are the 50 oz. The 351W stayed 28 oz.

The simple answer to your general question is NO. The rotating assembly balance is determined during the building or rebuilding of the engine. The crank, rods, pistons, etc. are setup to balance using the corresponding offset weight imbalance of 28 oz or 50 oz from the start. High performance engines can also be setup for a neutral imbalance meaning they are balanced internally and there is no offset weight on the exterior balancer or flywheel.

Stick with the 50 oz and you will be just fine. Swapping from the 85 to the 82 shouldn't be an issue, but again you want to make sure your timing marks are correct.
