    Default Gas door pull failure

My Dad had done this for his 88 TC.

I went to put sta-bil in the tank and pulled the gas door cord and it broke.

Here is how I fixed my problem.

I bought 20" of 1/16" steel cable and a box of garage door hardware from my local Ace hardware store.

I measured the original cord with the cable, added an inch, clamped on the stop and cut the excess cable off.

Works good and the cable will probably out last the car.

I really wanted the plastic coated cable but couldn't find any.
Measured the old plastic cord against the cable and added an inch and clamped the hardware to the cable.
Used my Dremel to grind down the stop end to fit inside the plastic part.

I'm sure the same concept will work on the other Four-eyed Ford's Gas door pulls.

Looks Great. Funny timing too. This week I was putting Stabil in mine and each time I grab that cable I get more and more nervous and am wondering when it will fail and what I will do. I am leaning towards just finding the parts for one without the power release and swapping it out so it's open all the time. Someone stealing my gas is not really a concern at this point.

Nice repair. For what it is worth, McMaster-Carr sells the coated cable although I'm surprised your local hardware store didn't have any.

    Bike brake cable works too.

    Well done, thanks for sharing!
