    Default Carb Gas Tank to EFI Gas Tank Swap - Fuel Level Question

    This question is for those who have swapped an EFI tank onto a carb'd early fox.

    I'm going to install Holley Sniper EFI on my Capri and I would like to run an in-tank fuel pump for better reliability. Wiring and plumbing the pump is no problem, but I am not sure about the sending unit;

    Can I still use the stock fuel level gauge with an EFI sending unit? I.E do the two systems operate over the same resistance range? If not, are there any known solutions to retain the stock gauge?

    My gauge works just fine. Also, I'm not intent on keeping the functionality of the LED on the center console, but if possible I would like to retain my stock gauges.

    Not sure if this will help. I went to carburetor on my 86. I used a holley fuel pressure regulator to reduce fuel pressure from efi pump and stock gauge works fine.

    The 83-86 EFI fuel level sensor should work. I don’t know about the physical fit of the 83-86 EFI tank into the 79-82 cars. The sensor is just variable resistance. Unfortunately 87-93, they reversed the signal.

    You need the 86 EFI sending unit to work with your gauge. Or as I did on my 85, I bought a used 87-93 sending unit and a new one for I think it was a 85 Tempo that is EFI. I swapped the chips in the sending unit to get the resistance correct for the 85 gauges.

    Before there was an aftermarket sending unit, there was a writeup on how to swap the guts to make the sending unit to work.

    Also, the efi tank has a fuel sending unit with the pump and where the hoses attach and a gauge sending unit that just has a wire running to it.

    And when I swapped mine the low fuel level light still worked.

    LMR sells the 86 sending unit. That part was released to the market just a few years ago.

    83-89 CFI/EFI fuel tanks do interchange. The 83-86 CFI/EFI sending units are the same.

    Current manual only covers 80-89.

    Carb tanks and carb sending units are different.

    Thanks for the info, guys. I finally decided to go with a new early fox tank, with provisions for my stock sending unit. I'm going to cut a hole into it and add a universal drop-in tank and weld in baffles. Seems to be the simplest way to go, from what I can see!
