Thread: Foxbody Royalty

    Default Foxbody Royalty

The Cosworth Capri coming up for auction got me thinking about the most significant foxbodies in existence: Foxbody Royalty. Special cars that were impactful to the 79-93 run of cars. Since the Cosworth Capri has had me drooling since it resurfaced, I'll start off the nominations with it.
Again, the garage is only accepting the best of the best. Your 1 of 1 optioned car may be royalty to you but does it deserve a parking spot next to the big boys?
How about one car at a time with some background on it?

way too kind Ben....but I'll take your vote and put it back on the table with another card to Mic.

FoxChassis indexes the info, I regurgitate.

FoxChassis has shown time and time again what is factory and what is not by just checking these.

For jlehma13....its very obsure, but the Mercury Capri was aerospace NACA ducted, bubus hooded Porsche 924 Carea Turbo gaurded and it just needed some good old 351 firepower.

To make it excape Gas Guzzler Tax in Cali, Ak made a bunch of turbo 2.3, 2.3 non turbo, and Turbo Windsor 255 and 351 conversions

    http://vb.foureyedpride.com/showthre...e-Foxes-around

So I raise the currently in Austin, TX Ak Miller car, the Bitchin' Crimson Cat 351 1982 twin turbo twin carbed Propane Capri was a step up from the range of municpal gas and Propane Granadas, Fairmonts and LTD's that Impco Gas, Ford and Ak Miller kicked out in 2.3 liter from from 1982 to 1985. It may ebven be bubble backed, and an 83 to fit the propane tank, as it sure lookes like an LN7 hatch on that.

    [QUOTE=xctasy;1769472]
The Ak Miller cars likely were totally covered by the CARB exemption for emissions, so may have been able to be sold privately. That has never been Ford practice. Normal Ford rules say prototypes are "burn notice" cars, and have to be excluded from normal warranty product liability issues because they may be missing critical compliance, so they wipe there hands of any warranty unless its a production variant with EO emmissions numbers and a valid engine VIN code and valid transmission code is in existance. That makes a 1981 351 W AOD twin carb turbo impossiable to fully certify in that manner, and technically unable to be sold.

That engine above is in Jay Storers 1984 112 page SA book

"Economy or Performance Propane Fuel Conversions for Automotive Engines: A Complete Guide to Using Propane as a Clean, Economical, High-Octane, Alternative Fuel"

is posted here in its splendor

It was in an 81 Red Ak Miller RS Capri with 351W conversion, and then twin CA 425 Impcos for 920 cfm, and two E series converters able to flow 650 horsepower, and two nice big turbos. The kit was a 1982, I think, gave 15 mpg US highway.

The 81' Capri is a twin turbo 351w with an AOD running 12 PSI of boost on propane. I ran a similiar setup but with a 302 and single turbo. I am currently building a 347 with a turbo but switched back to gasoline just recently.

Here are NPD's "1st and last" VIN cars. Understanding there could be another 1st VIN and it's doubtful this car was actually the first to leave the factory, it's obviously a special car. In my opinion, two more cars that deserve a place at the table.

The NPD 93 convertible is not the last VIN. It's almost 18,000 VINs too low.

I'll need a refresher on what that one's claim to fame was. I thought they were book-end cars.

Ron Fournier's metal work has been an all time inspiration to me...its exceptional.

Irresptive iffing its glass or metal, I love the fat fendered Fox era...the Fox was kinda narrow till it fattened out in Fox4, S shell LSC and SN95/New Edge form, and so a widebody Mustang or Capri isn't a 75 inch wide car...its still ultra compact.

So my other all time vote for Foxbody Royalty is these two..

    1982 MUSTANG GT IMSA
Car is in very nice shape for its age, its one of only a few made like this back in 1982. This car has Ford factory Recaro seats, 4 point roll cage, the interior is also in very nice scape, it has 355 gears with a Hurst shifter, Performer Edelbrock manifold with a Holly 650 db pumper, under drive pulleys, shorty headers, the car runs great. If your looking for a really great collectable car this is it. I bought this car almost 30 years ago and its been the greatest car for me, its really a one of a kind Mustang and gets tons of looks at shows and on the street. It has good paint but does have some imperfections in a few spots. The car also comes with extra Ford parts. I have a second Mustang just like it that Im willing to sell as a package deal if interested, it needs some work but its in good shape and has a great motor with the same rare IMSA body.

Can anyone confirm the legitimacy of the sale...sounds sad....

Daytonas and the IMSA replica production cars, not the Cologne Capri based race cars, are my all time fave Stangs, so I'm a little puzzled at what the other VIN number is for its matchmate.

The grey car has no details on the CL add

    The Black car is 1FABP16FOCF195420.

This is the one that is no longer in such wonderfull shape.

Leah Jung did a photo shoot with it back in 2011, at least, acording to the picture datestamps.

The black cars plate was blotted out, but it still reflected the same number

But after driving the modern Mustang to Nashville, the old GL feels brilliant. It's light and lithe, and you're nearly sitting on the rear axle. It has all the rigidity of a damp sun dress, but it wants to rotate around you. It's playful where the new GT is all business. Everything's a little loose and hilarious. The steering's over boosted, the shifter is like stirring a five-gallon bucket of gears and oatmeal, and the brakes checked out sometime in the last century. I nearly blow the first stop sign after sinking the pedal to the floor.

I would be remiss if I didn't proclaim Summit Ford's Dominator! They were the first to make a special edition of the GT. They were there before Saleen and Soloman American. They released the Dominator in the Spring of 1982.

Even had a special guest in Jackie Stewart and some special cars like an M81 Race car and a Enduro GT there that day.

A little more about the NPD "Book End" cars and the 93 white coupe that was the last one built. There is a more complete article about this car in the December issue of Mustangs times, by Jim Smart. The gist of it is Rick Schmidt and Robert Blackwell are two prominent enthusiasts that know the history of the FIRST, and the LAST TWO Foxes to roll off the assembly line. Rick's red GT Convertible was actually built in June of 1993, and put away for "final assembly symbolic use" on August 26th. Robert's white coupe was actually the last to be bucked and assembled...on 8/25/93 according to the article. Its a really good read, ending as:

"Robert adds that, in conversations with Rick Schmidt, he has learned that three GT Convertibles were built and earmarked as the last ceremonial Fox, which was how Ford did things at the time in case it needed a backup plan. In the end, Ford didn't need two of the convertibles. Rick's GT convertible was placed on the line and driven off behind Robert's while LX to signal the end of the Mustang's Fox-body era."

So we are talking about last built, and last to roll off the line. Pretty cool story, and knowing Rick and his attention to history and details I can only assume it's true.

How about the 1982 SSP Engineering Mule purchased from Emil Lofler which also might have been the Texas DPS test car.

    At least somebody thought so!
