Default V6 rear axle to change gear ratio for 1979-5.0?

    Hi there,
    Anyone tried the above?
Currently have the 2.47 original axle and c4 tranny.
    I spotted a v6 axle nearby.
Worth to rescue from being scrapped?
    Regards,
    Hans.

No, the 79 V6's on T5 and Mustang/Capri Foxes to Europe were all 6.7" Sterling axles, which don't interchange with your 2.47 7.5".

Do check it, though. If its really a 7.5, then it'll be a simple swap, and it'll be 3.08;1. Canvaspaul in the south of The Netherlands has pictures in the post below.

    See https://fordsix.com/viewtopic.php?t=69291

Best advice for those who use them, is to find an Auburn 7.5" Traction Lok Carrier and install a new ring and pinion with the ratio you want. Yukkon gear makes Regular Production Option replacments. Any thing else, and you'll risk differerntial spider gear failure.

IIRC, Its the carrier and other parts, not the ring and pinion that make the 7.5" axle a Loaded Craps game to use. Breakage is dependant on actual use, which indicates its a quality problem, not a design one. If they were always breaking, it would be a design issue. Ford made 6.7, 7.5, 8.7, 8.8, 9.25 and 10.25" axles in the same factory, and they found it cheeper to design a new replacment axle than do anything to fix the 7.5" axle up.

Untill the 1984 upgrade, the 7.5" was potentially a common spider gear breaker. But you could still get well over 400000 kilometers out of them behind a 5.0 Wagon, or break it before the warranty was over behind a 5.0.

A set of 3.08, 3.45's or even 3.73's work very well with a 5.0 that doesn't have the stock tractor cam and 2-bbl intkae the 79's came with. The 2.47 axle was designed to get the fuel economy up to 21 mpg at 55 mph.

Other 7.5's ran between 2.26, 2.47, 2.73, 3.08, 3.45. In Aerostar, Ranger and Bronco II'S, 3.73, 4.10, 4.56 were used as well. 2.26's were generally 4.2 V8 axle ratios, but some 5.0's got them too.

IIRC, Ford skipped 3.27, 3.55, and 3.90 some other the 8.8 axles had, but you can get a Ranger 3.55 7.5" axle according to the product options.

All the European export V6's were 6.7, a downgraded Mustang II/Pinto axle with a longer pinion. Some 3.3's, and some 2.3's got the 7.5" axle, but lots of cars had the 6.7.

My advice is that you are going to have to look for another 7.5" axle with an axle tag like this.

    2.73 open 7.5

    3.08 T-L (Traction Lok)

All 7.5's were generally similar, but the Limited Slip Differertail has two kinds of optional traction loc, and some are non limited slip (all from 1978 to 1981 were non Traction Lok.). The casting number changed for 1984.

The early 7.5 axle was again changed in 1981 to suit the optional Traction Loc axle, and a good source of beeter gear ratios are the 3.08:1 cars.

The 8.8 has a 2.47 option. Ford has always found making a new part to suit an existing axle carrier is the best use of its money.

Generally, a great source for parts is the internet, and buy the ring and pinion you want.

The USA has the parts you need. Oddball stuff like Traction Lok 6 cylinder axles with rare ring an pinions are what Ford doues on occasion to fix up an EPA problem.

The 1981 2.47 7.5" axle, and Taction Lok option was used on some stick shift Capri 3.3''s, but the parts are around to make anything work if you network.

You just have to persist with the request, and not get mixed up with other whipsers of not true info.

I checked a seller in Renton, Washington, and he had lots of ring and pinions. Just gotta network....another guy got an 83-86 F150/Bronco 2.47 8.8" ring and pinion from a wrecker in Baltimore.
