Default Seat Recommendations for 1980 Fox

    Howdy all;

I do not want to re-upholster the original seats on my 1980 Mustang. They have no side support for cornering. I'd prefer to find an aftermarket sports seat or a pair of stock Mustang seats from another model year that will simply bolt in (or at least can be bolted in with a known, available seat slider/track).

Here are the features I need:

    - Comfortable for long distance traveling... no rock hard race seats.
    - Some measure of lateral support in corners.
    - NON power seats. Manual adjustment only.
    - Available in some shade of medium blue

Do you guys have any recommendations? Would be great if I could find some stock Mustang seats from an SN95 or something, complete with Mustang logo, that would bolt right in and solve my issues.

Any ideas are very much appreciated. Thanks!

I have 94 seats in my 79. Thay sit about an inch lower and will easily take fox tracks. Tmi has pony covers available.

PO put Thunderbird TurboCoupe seat like these into my McLaren:

    Attachment 125046

Extremely comfortable for hours at a time. Standard Fox mounts. Excellent match to '85 Regatta Blue. Probably very hard to find in good condition.

Are those headrests removable? Or do they pivot way back so they don't make contact with the back of your head? That looks like a good option, and I don't mind re-upholstering them if they aren't in good condition. Do they sit higher or lower than stock? Many thanks.

Those 94-04's should be easy to find, and I bet someone makes a pony cover in some sort of blue. Thanks!

The Turbocoupe seat are basically 87-88 Mustang GT seats that came in different materials and colors. I originally put Turbocoupe seats an installed halo headrests in my 79.

Later, I bought another set and recovered them with TMI's pony upholstery

Most comfortable seats in my experience have
    - the taller 26” backrest (pre 1991)
    - knee bolsters
    - manual adjustment
    - 92+ seat back mechanisms so the lock in when back
    - great condition springs in the seat
    - great condition seat backrest internals
    - power lumbar buttons that be easily connected to power
    - GT style or SVO style brand new foam kits
    - SVO / 91-93 style head rests
    - halo headrests if you don’t mind interference from the visors, etc, or opted for 91+ 24” back seats

the 86 seat tracks installed will lower the seat base height compared to 87+ seat tracks in my experience.

If you have the head room go with the 87+ so you sit up a little more.

87+ Tbird and mustang seats should be high up on your list

I’ve had 89GT seats in my 86GT for over 20 years and 300K miles. They are SO much better than the 86 sears were in terms of comfort.

The bulky headrests shown on the Tbird seats are standard on 89GT also. They flip up but they do hit the visor either way.

my plan is SVO foam, SVO leather kit, SVO headrest when I redo my 86GT.

Seat replace is good idea. A wear item. Good seat is needed to drive car properly. Can make car feel different.
Which ever one chosen, do check the framework, lower cushion springs, foam. Clean and lube tracks.
Common problem is seat backrests with broken welds. Makes a person sit crooked, no left side support.
Lower foam can be cut by springs. Feels like sitting in a hole. Flaking foam on carpet underneath is clue.
Cannot really see damage by looking at them. Can by sitting in them.

This summer picked up a mint grey cloth 92 Ranger STX supercab bucket, similar to 80's Mustang/Escort GT style.
DS replacement for my Ranger, not the Mustang, although it would fit in the Mustang using Mustang's tracks.
Features large deep seat back vinyl pouch, manual track, adj center knee bolster, power lumbar and side thigh bolsters.
Pic-a-part yard purchase 15.00 with discount. A steal.
Removed entire supercab track, installed my XLT one. Wired up the powered features. Truck is comfy and fun again.

Seat felt crooked, had a lean. Looked great visually. No left shoulder/side backrest support. Rt side fine.
Pulled up back cover. Yup. Backrest cross brace needed repair on left (door) side.
Normal in/exit pushing on backrest cracks cross brace to side frame of backrest tack welds. E.g. broken seat back frame.
Regular hardware store t-brackets and rivets did the job. Now, nice even squared up solid strong back support.
Also, added a scrap sheet of Tyvek between lower cushion seat foam and springs. Stops foam damage from springs digging in.

Although cloth requires more work cleaning, is more comfy in summer heat and winter cold than vinyl or leather.
A electric seat heater pad easily cures the cold vinyl part. Vinyl can get super hot in the summer without a large towel.
All the 'yard premium leather drivers seats i see are cracked, torn, and look like heck sooner than the other types.
