Default Getting ready to buy new wheels, what are my choices for 5 lug SVO brake it?

OK guys I need your help here. I am looking to get a second set of wheels/tires for my 82 GT. My car currently has 245/45/17 tires on all four corners with 17 x 9 Cobra R wheels that have an offset of +24mm. I also have the typical exhaust tips you see on the 87 to 93 5.0 LX. The original owner installed a brand new SVO 5 lug brake conversion kit back in the mid to late 90s. So because of this I am told my selection of 5 lug wheels is not that great compared to someone who has say an SN95 5 lug conversion.

I spoke to Jason at LMR and he said they know these wheels will fit my set up for sure:

    -95 Cobra R Wheel

    -94-95 17" "Tri-Bar" GT Wheel
-94-98 16" Waffle Star Pony Wheel
    -94-97 Cobra Wheel
    -94-04 15" V6 Wheel
    -94-04 16" V6 Wheel
    -99-04 SVE 10th Anniversary Wheel
    -SVE Drag Wheels
    -Weld Draglites
    -Weld Prostars
    -Weld RT-S

Does anyone who has a 5 lug fox spindle conversion know if any other wheels will fit on my 82? As of right now I am looking at getting the 10th Anny wheels. I would like to run a 10 inch wide wheel in the back with 275/40/17 tires and 9 inch wide wheels in the front with 245/45/17 tires. I jacked up the car the other night and it looks like it will be a very tight fit with the 275s. I am only lowered about 1 inch in the back at most so I know that should help.

Ideally I wanted to put on the SVE Series 3 wheels from LMR. Kind of the bigger more modern version of the old school mesh Rikens/Enkeis that were really popular back in the day.

Thanks in advance for any insight you guys can provide.

I have the American muscle 10th any wheels on my car(9 and 10s) , BUT, I'm sn95 front and rear. I dont think the 10s will go on your car. Mine are very close to the lower arms and still rub on the inner fender with the proper road. I'm lowered 1.5 inch-ish. I believe the tires you listed are the ones I run. I also added a .250 spacer on the rear wheel flange

Why don't you think the 10s will work on my car? Visually from what I can see thus far it may rub a bit on my exhaust pipe but it could also work as it is going to be very very close I think or at least I hope it will. Hoping others who have a similar set up as mine to chime in. I am lowered at max 1 inch in the back so I think that helps out a lot and there is no quad shock either.

Because my sn 95 rear is .75 wider (each side) than a fox rear thus moving the wheels out further plus my spacer. I guess you could use a approximately 1 inch spacer. Even still, a pic is worth a 1000 wordsName: 20181106_151247.jpg

Size: 69.2 KB if you were closer I would let you try them. I'm only trying to help, wheels are expensive. If I had the choice I would probably tried a 9 in the rear on my car, but the guy I bought them from chose 10s when he bought them. And the price was oh so right

Unfortunately, your application is completely different than mine. Also the tire I am thinking of using in the rear is only a 275 and not a 295 like what you have.

That's what I was saying. I was giving it as a point of reference on that particular wheel, and what you will run into with that large of a wheel/tire combo

I am running a 17x9 FFR wheel with 235/45zr17 on the front with the sn95 swap. On the rear I am still running the 5 lug drum brake set up and running a 18x10 FFR wheel with 285/35ZR18 and only had to flip the quad shocks around to clear and am running the same exhaust as you are. and a 1.5" drop all around. I bought them from american muscle but had to use my original tires on the front.Name: 84_3.jpg

Yes, I think if one wants to be completely safe on the earlier foxes going 235s in the front is the safest. It seems like with the 79 to 84 cars the chassis seems smaller and hence maybe the wheel wells are slightly smaller. Wow you managed to get a 285 in with just flipping a quad shock on an 84? Good job! You would think a 275 then should be OK on my 82 with no quad shock and being only 1 inch lowered. Going to cross my fingers on this one. Waiting for Black Friday at LMR to pull the trigger

Supercharged347: Also I am assuming you are running 2.5 inch exhaust pipes like myself as I know there is an option for 2.25 inch pipes. I was looking underneath my car and was thinking that 1/4 inch can come in handy for the little bit of extra room.

I know this might be a shot in the dark here but does anyone know for sure if American Racing Torque Thrust Bullitt wheels will fit on my 82 GT with has the SVO brake kit on it? That is will these wheels work with fox spindles? For anyone wanting to do a 5 lug conversion spend the extra dollars and go with the SN95 spindles so you will not be as restricted on wheel choices.

    EDIT:

I just re-read the entire thread. I have to say I am surprised your Cobra R's fit currently, many have issues again due to the small center cap as I mention below. If your current setup works, then the Bullitt wheels may work just fine. The real Ford Cobra R wheels even had issues with the center bore being so tight that the wheel would not fully seat against the rotor hub as the spindle snout would hang up on the inside of the center bore of the wheel. I experienced that one first hand myself. Which ultimately led to my first SN95 spindle swap.

The SVO or Fox spindle will not allow the center cap of the Bullitt wheels to seat properly without a space due to the long snout of the spindles. If you are a fan of the small center cap 5 lug wheels, I would recommend just making the change/upgrade to the SN95 spindles. It will make your life much easier.

Also keep in mind the SVO rear brakes will not work as effectively with any front calipers other than the SVO 73mm front calipers. You need to look at brake swaps as a system. Either swap the SVO brake system front/rear or the SN95 front/rear. Mixing the two together will give you less than stellar braking performance in the long run. Good Luck!

Yes Trey thanks for the advice.

I just bought the 10th Anny wheels from LMR. 17 x 9 in the front and 17 x 10 in the back. For tires I got 245s in the front and 275s in the back. Jason their wheel specialist guy said these will fit and as you can see in the original post they have list of wheels know to fit the fox spindles.

It is possible that a bullitt wheel will fit but because there are so many different kinds/brands of bullitt wheels out there I decided to play it safe and go with the 10th Anny wheels. I was hoping to go with the AR Torque Thrust 18 inch wheels......however Jason said he is unsure about the fitment on the front because of the fox spindles. He said the back should be fine.

Because I just picked up the car only just over 3 weeks ago I don't want to change up brake systems at least not yet lol. The original owner who I bought my 82 from installed a brand new SVO brake kit on the car which still works perfectly fine and looks really good as this was a fair weather car. If you are interested in seeing what the Cobra R wheels look like on my car here is a link to my intro on the is forum. The front wheels probably could use a 1/4 inch spacer as they do rub on the lower control arms. I have got those ordered from LMR as well.
