Thread: 83 GT seat foam

    Default 83 GT seat foam

    Hi all!

The seat foam in my 83 GT front driver's seat is deteriorating a bit. I've been looking at the TMI seat foam products here:

    https://www.tmiproducts.com/mustang/...-bolsters.html
    https://www.tmiproducts.com/mustang/...-low-back.html

I'm assuming the first link is the correct one, but I was hoping to confirm that with someone here.

    Thanks for your help!

Yes, that will be the correct foam for your 83 Sport seats. I might be incorrect but it appears your current seats have the later 87-89 Sport seat headrests, rather than the Halos.

If you are ordering upholstery from TMI and you need the headrest covers, you will need to do a custom order. Also you can most likely get a better price from any of the Mustang vendors as TMI only sells at their MSRP to retail customers.

I wouldn't buy the replacement foam for those seats. Those seats look similar to the 83 sports performance seats, but they are not the sports performance seats and the replacement foam will not work. If you look at the configuration of the foam surfaces (especially the outer foam bolsters) you'll see that they are different shapes. They look like a high back seat, which would rule out the low back seats also. I'm not sure where those seats came from. Maybe someone else can chime in with an idea where they came from, but they don't look like Mustang seats. The rear seat looks original, however (vinyl piping).
If they take my stapler, then I'll set the building on fire...

Interesting, I thought the same thing, but then thought it must be the angle of the picture and the headrests being replaced.

I wonder if those are T-Bird or Cougar seats?

If Tbirdman is correct, then keep in mind that if you buy the TMI upholstery for your correct year model the covers would not fit the seat correctly either.

The frames under the seats in question may be the same as the Mustang Sport seats, but I can't confirm or deny that, just a thought. Good Luck!

Those are GM seats and I obviously don't know for sure but my money is on Pontiac. Those are not Ford seats so buying anything from TMI will be a waste of money. I like the way they look though. Take the opportunity to do something custom I say. Do what you want though. I was just trying to help. EDIT: I will even go a step further, LOL. They may have been installed on many cars but I believe they were also in the Fiero so that's my guess. These are Fiero seats without the speakers in the headrests. Yes, that was actually a thing way back then.

Homer might be right in regards to the seats being GM. Although I don't believe those are Fiero seats. The Fiero seats have an integrated headrest that looks different to me. IF the headrest on those is separate they definitely aren't Fiero seats. The Pleating also doesn't match the normal Fiero setup and the side foam looks a bit different to me, but then again who knows!

Well that explains why the foam didn't look exactly right to me. Thanks for the heads up!

    Edit*
I'm actually going to be pulling them out this coming weekend. I'll see what i find as far as a part number goes.

I am going with Trey (for the record I said I was guessing at best) but at least you see where I got it from. Those are 120% GM seats. But likely not Fiero seats. Same frame I bet. Maybe a Grand Am or Grand Prix or Sunfire even.

I'm 99% sure they are GM seats. Look like Grand Am style.
