Default 1979 Ghia Coupe Build Thread

After a long break from Fox bodies, I have re-entered this world and recently picked up a Ghia coupe from a member here. She is a 5.0 with 4-speed that is all original and in good condition for her age. I am going to update her in a tasteful way that preserves her beauty but enhances performance. I was hesitant to title this a build thread as the mods will be moderate but still want to chronicle and share it with the great folks here.

Yeah wasn’t sure what category it should go in. Thanks for the compliment and help.

She’s in pretty good overall condition. Someone took good care over the 39 years. I continue to be intrigued by the originality. This is the same year and body style my dad brought home from the dealer to test drive for a day (remember those days?!). That was an orange one with black interior. It was a 2.3 turbo. Mom made him return it but it did sit in our driveway for 2 hours!! I was hooked then and now 8 Mustangs later this is my first 4-eye! This ones a keeper.

Thank you. I love the white over red. Super classy. I have started gently cleaning the interior piece by piece. Some of the plastic is a bit brittle and fragile.

    What a beautiful car!

My dad bought a brand new '79 mustang 5.0 as well. It was white with the porno red interior. As a seventeen year old at the time I was in love with it.

Nice! Is the car still in the family? As a side note I will be looking to you for pointers when the time comes for a repaint in the factory color.

Nah, dad would trade the mustangs in every couple years to get a newer one. Except for the mustang II years, he never got one of those, lol.

Any help you need, just holler. Trey or I should be able to answer anything you need.

Okay, I am going to follow this one! I recall that car for sale I think!

You and I should share restoration details! I am just starting to do some work on a 5.0 Ghia coupe also! Ours in an auto at this time but intent is to do a SROD swap with factory parts. Yours would be a nice reference!

Not sure what your intent is for "in a tasteful way that preserves her beauty but enhances performance" but my current plan is to not do too much to take away from the stock look of the engine compartment and car.

A couple of early 5.0 threads I have saved for basic info:

Hey 82GT - Funny I read your threads prior to getting my car. I first reached out to the seller back in May but didn’t make a deal until September . Great seller BTW as car was in Michigan and I am in California. As for my plans, I am keeping all of the interior and exterior components and cleaning/repairing/replacing as needed with a repaint in the factory color. What is getting modded is the engine, tranny, suspension, wheels and tires. The wheels are first as the tire on the car are 20 years old and do not hold air. The very next priority is getting it smogged and registered. Not looking forward to that at all with California way overboard on regulation.

Very likely one of the Top Five '79 Mustangs I've ever seen. Good luck with it.

Would you mind showing a pic of the headliner if it's still there? Tier grain white vinyl I'm guessing?

Thanks for the compliment! Not sure it’s Top 5 in its current state but hope it becomes that over the next few months

I have started to order parts and here is one of the first that arrived. Not anything that would cause a lot of excitement but I get to check one of the cells in the project spreadsheet lol

Love it! I don't know why Ford didn't put those on more years than they did honestly.
