Default Fitment issues with 1983 5.0 GT air cleaner lid decal

    Hi Guys,

I'm having trouble finding a replacement decal for a 1983 5.0 GT air cleaner lid. I've purchased two now, from different suppliers, and neither one would fit. They were both just slightly too small. I know of at least one other person that has had the same issue with a 1983 air cleaner decal, so I know this isn't an isolated case.

I'm wondering if the place that is making these decals is putting the correct 1983 wording on the decal, but cutting it to fit a 1982 air cleaner? Would that explain the issue?

Can anybody measure a 1982 air cleaner lid for me?

Or, does anybody know where I can buy a 1983 stripe decal that is guaranteed to fit my 1983 air cleaner lid?

Or, is there an other explanation, like a certain way the 1983 decal needs to be installed to make it fit?

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks guys.

This one is supposed to be for '83. I don't know if it comes from the same place as the others you've mentioned. NPD is usually pretty good though.

Thanks for the link. Looks like it's made by Osborne, same as the other two I've purchased already. I'm going to call them tomorrow to check on the fitment.

I was just wondering if there was something stupid that I was missing.

Can you just cut it in half, or thirds to "spread" it out to be the size you need to fit the arch?

Can you post a picture of your air cleaner lid? Also is your GT a 4bbl or a CFI setup. That might be the difference. I know the 82 GT lid is domed instead of the flat nature of the 83-85 4bbl lid, so that makes a difference. I thought the lid for the 83-85 4bbl setup was the same, but I may be incorrect. I know the decal is specific to the 83 and then 84/85 models.

If I can remember I can take a picture of my 82 5.0 2bbl lid when I am out at the shop later today or tomorrow.

The 83 4bbl decal is similar to the 82 style in that it is the solid black half circular shape with the letter, so you can cut and stretch it to fit and look right IMHO.

It is not the same as the 84/85 decals.

You might try taking it to a vinyl graphics company. They can apply heat and whatever to make it fit. Might cost a couple of dollars but I bet the result will be worth it.

I think I might try this, or just get one made that fits properly.

Thanks for all the replies guys!

This is the air cleaner I bought. The seller said it was a 1982, but from all of the research I did, it looks like a 1983. I'm installing it on a non-Mustang 5.0 application, but I have my heart set on the 1983 black stripe decal. Problem is, the replacements don't seem to fit properly.

Oh, it was all faded and the cover needed to be refinished. I said ah heck, new decals are only $10, no big deal...except none of them fit!! FML...lol.
