1981 ghia coupe with a canvas roll back roof?

I have a 1981 mustang ghia coupe with a canvas roll back roof. It is like the 60's and 70's VW bug style. My friend had a blue one about 10 years ago. I purchased mine 5 years ago. Has anyone ever seen one? Was it a option? I am running out of places to look for info on this. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

i have never seen anything like that before. 81 is before they brought back the convertible,maybe its aftermarket??

It could have been dealer installed, I have the window sticker somewhere, but I can't find it. My friend had one just like it but it was blue. That was about 10 years ago. This car was purchased it St.petersburg. Florida

i would start with finding the window sticker,maybe it lists it there.try looking for the buildsheet in the car,if you haven't already. have you contacted Ford for an option report? that would be helpful.

How do I get an option report? I didn't know you could do that.

call the Ford customer service number,1(800) 392-3673
ask for a history 999 report. they will mail you a report with all the options for your car listed.its very interesting. i'm thinking the sunroof is a Ghia thing,there were VW ghia's with the same top.

That's not a factory option, so it won't be listed on the 999. And, keep in mind, 999 reports are fraught with errors. We've got a guy who is a member and is an expert on some of the crazy-roofed cars and I'll see if I can bring this thread to his attention... My bet is that it's a dealer option or was a local shop conversion that was done since you know of another one that is/was somewhat local.

Have you decoded the door tag? It should tell you what roof came from the factory - will prolly indicate "none", meaning the roof is dealer/aftermarket.

If it's of any use, these type roof's were popular in the sixties & seventies in the UK, though they have been around a lot longer, the UK ones were mostly manufactured by a company called Webasto.

Webasto is the company that makes most of the sunroofs for VW's also.
