    Does anyone know what the DF, M, or WQM stand for in the buck tag?

    We do not know what those codes mean. It was surmised at one time that WQM was "wide quarter moulding" but I believe that code was even on a few tags that had no quarter moldings at all.

    Undecoded buck codes. Will the mystery ever be solved? Older Ford owners wonder too.
    Some codes were carried over for years on Ford models. Clues?

    My car is basically the same in this thread. Cobra blk/blk hatch, 25,000 units later.
    Difference is turbo engine, trans, no a/c.
    Optioned with full tinted glass for 59.00, prob because of no a/c. Code ST- standard tint?
    Also has light group option with roof map light ('M'?), heated back glass, console.

    Buck 2,3, 4th line 1C A DF TT ST M HB DRM CBR WQM MBW 5 V 37 5
    Very similar with more stamps.

    Door data tag is slightly diff GVWR and GAWR. NA low back vinyl, VVGG springs. VR MLDG A/C R S blank.

    Under the understanding some buck codes are items, mods, done before trim line and inspect stamps.
    Added holes, brackets, braces, parts before paint. The non-generic parts.
    M could be map? Code to add the mounting plate added to the roof for the assy.
    DF could be defroster? Code to add extra holes in roof and cowl for wiring?
    ST, WQM are common but not on all.
    Maybe W is a color code for quarter molding stripings. Mine are red.
    ST- special trim, sport trim (black)? Both our Cobras have blackout trim. No code for this early on?
    ST sport tuned tailpipe bracket later ST eliminated on bucks in 85 with start of dual exhaust?
    Maybe tags were re stamped later on the buck line, omitting codes already done.
    Or early build mistakes needed more to be added.

    A chance to compare two early 79 cobra cars, pretty close content wise, build dates, from DAP.
    Next year, will continue to probe at FWHQ shows here in Detroit if i remember. Someone knows.
    Being so long ago, could be dead, retired, moved out of town, or do not go to car shows.
    Or get a peek in a Marti 65-73 Mustang Cougar Tagbook for clues.

    I know for sure that DF is not defroster because HB (heated backlite) is defroster.

    I'm fairly certain we've eliminated 'sport option' or 'sport tuned exhaust' for ST because some cars with one of both of those options did not have that code and vice versa.

    The 'light group' or 'light/convenience group', which is designated with the V (visibility) code through 1984, included the pivoting map lamp. If you had a sunroof it was deleted anyway for a smaller light. If you had a convertible for lighted integrated in the rear view mirror.

    M and WQM are only on 1979 Dearborn tags. Too straightly stamped to be inspection code.
    Read plants had flexibility with buck codes for years.
    Noticed the first cobra's scoop code was 3. Have same scoop on mine, no #3. Must be the 5. Has hole.
    Wonder if the K member was coded. Mustang/Capri model or coupe or hatch specific mods?
    Something like console mount brackets, holes, but maybe they all got them.
    Letter codes may have been selected unrelated to part name abbr so as not to match another with same.
    Codes important enough to be repeated many times.

    An example why simpler times were called that. Now everything is recorded, needed or not.
    In a 'throw away' society. As if more small was thrown away back then.
    Now more big is disposable, small kept? Codes.
    The mystery of some old codes used or why omitted continues.

    Hood/scoop code was different depending on model and engine. In this case 3 vs 5 is no-hole (3) or hole (5) covered by a scoop.

    Here are the codes for 1979 Mustang:

    1 = no hood scoop
    3 = forward-facing non-functional hood scoop
    5 = hole in hood covered by forward-facing non-functional hood scoop
    7 = rear-facing non-functional full length hood scoop
    9 = hole in hood covered by rear-facing non-functional full length hood scoop

    Cobra got 3 (5.0L) or 5 (2.3T)
    Pace Car got 7 (5.0L) or 9 (2.3T)

    Other non-Cobra and non-PC models could get code 3 hood/scoop as an option with any engine other than 2.3T, and code 5 hood/scoop was standard on any non-Cobra and non-PC with 2.3T

    I don’t know if this would be the best place to ask it but would anyone happen to know if you have to have a ‘79 specific door to replace one on a ‘79 or could you put the components out of a ‘79 door into a newer year if it is possible.
