Thread: Glass

    Default Glass

Looking to replace the door, quarter and hatch glass. I found new door glass. Does anyone make quarter window or hatch glass. I should have replaced when I had the car redone but now it’s done the scratched up glass is bugging me.

You probably have to order new glass. There are lots of sources for used glass.

If the scratches in the glass can be felt with a finger nail, then they are too deep to polish out. If they are less than that, you might consider trying to polish the glass if you can't find NOS. Not a fun process, but can yield excellent results. Good Luck!

Carlite should be available, you just need to order it from a glass shop. If you
Need date coded glass for Concours showing, then there are other options

Not trying to jack this thread but I'd like a little more info on both of these comments.

I have a small amount of damage from an orbital catching a back window I'd like to minimize by polishing one day.

Also, I asked around about Carlite up here in Canada and never got any positive replies from any glass shops. I even tried the web site and never got a reply to my inquiry

Cerium Oxide is generally the go-to compound for polishing glass. Search the web, there are all kinds of kits out there you can buy that have different grit sanding pads, etc. to polish glass. Most will tell you how to determine how bad your damage is and direct you from there as to what you need. Honestly generally is a longer process than polishing paint, but the overall process is essentially the same just with a few tweaks. Good Luck!

Ordered all new door and quarter glass from Rockauto. I’ll probably bite the bullet and order the OEM hatch glass off eBay. The car will look so much better w new glass.

I know they offer date coded glass for the early cars (65-70), didn't know they had that service for the late model cars as well.

Ok, maybe not. All they do is buy unmarked glass and etch them using a stencil. There are other companies as well.

I bought some cerium oxide to try and polish out some scratches I had on my quarter windows. Either I'm just not doing it right or it just plain takes hours to get a scratch out cause I polished the same small scratch for close to 30 minutes and it looks lighter but it's still there.

Has anyone tried buying the polycarbonate glass like optic armour or proglass sells and cutting it down to fit the quarter window opening like the factory glass? They only sell quarter glass listed as for 79-93 so I'm assuming it's all suppose to be mounted from the outside like the 87-93 quarter windows.

    as Wraithracing ws saying.

polishing is just taking big scratches and making them smaller and smaller till the eye can't see them. as with paint use coarser grades polish (like starting with toothpaste grit) and work all the way down to the glass polishing final grits. Its a long, long tedious task to do it correctly but if there is no good glass or its too costly it becomes the only only option.
