Thread: rear main seal

    Default rear main seal

Does the motor have to come out of 79 pace car to fix rear main seal? Would a mechanic at a Ford Dealership be able to handle it? Seems like nobody is comfortable with this job.

I would think you can do it on a lift or in the driveway. You have to remove the trans and flywheel then you'll have access to the rear main. That's if you have a one piece rear main. Not sure on the '79

Ah, that would explain why nobody wants to touch it. Sorry I didn't know. Ignore my post.

One-piece wasn't until four months after the 1983 model year started.

It's not impossible to do with the engine in, but getting the pan off is a tight fit. The engine would need to be jacked up off the mounts as high as it can be for clearance. Dropping the transmission out will make it a lot easier to get the pan out too, but then you're getting close to the same time and work as pulling the engine. It was a lot easier with the older cars with the front sump as the pan was much easier to get out.

If I pulled the transmission and flywheel, would I still have to take off the oil pan?

Yes, because the 2 piece seal has to be installed with the rear main cap. The one piece seal can be installed and removed with the main cap in place and therefore with the oil pan on.
