Default Wish I had a Camera Moment

Most weekends some one practices aerobatics over our neighborhood.
So when working on one of the cars, it took me some time to see it was not the
    normal biplane, but a P-51.
The Collings Foundation was displaying their Wings of Freedom warbirds about 30 miles away.
Then halfway through washing supper dishes the B-17 Nine o Nine is flighing right over the house.
And me holding a dish towel as it dissapears over the trees.

The sound those things make is incredible. People come out of their houses because it doesn't sound like anything else flying today. Very cool you got to see it!

    Default Lucked out here

Used to see C-47s all the time in the 60's. Plus sonic booms from military jets.
Can always tell a prop job by the drone, especially the big ones.

8/17/18 annual air show weekend, about 20 miles south of house.
Yankee Air Museum, Willow Run Airport, Ypsilanti, MI.
They give rides if you buy a ticket.
Was working on the cars too. Outside on lookout. Fri, Sat, Nothing.
    Sunday. Sure enough.

Heard props, then seen it. Four engine B17 'Yankee Lady' No camera. Was inside too.
Got the phone cam ready. Went outside later.
Yup. Heard another one. B25 'Yankee Warrior'.
Was not easy-only have seconds to react, find out where it is, and aim. Usually get one chance.

Dagenham, I know want you mean, 4 nine cylinder radials make a cool sound.
If they still have the engines they had a few years ago when we went to see them, they were made by Studebaker.
And gr79, I got one picture the next day, but was slower than you.

Size: 98.6 KB if you look at the little painting of Africa on the side he said he flew that... twice. 80 mph 200ft up. At our little air strip you can walk right out on the runway and touch these. They were here for a barnstormer tour this spring. 150- 200k will get you into one if you're interested.

    Interesting pics.
the B-17- 3-5 seconds from closest visual point? Nice shot. Clearly ain't no airliner.
Crazy seeing those guns sticking out. We'da been in trouble if hostile.
Was in a parking lot once seen a fairly close F-117 looked like a crow or something at 1st glance.

Default reverse- plane took pic of me

Video from the 'other side'. The plane.
Just happened to be watching the video when at 13:36...waaa? Could not believe it.
Still pic from video Aug 7-8 2010, annual Thunder Over Michigan Ypsi MI. airshow.
A show that flys old warbirds over peoples houses that we try to take a photo of.
All jets are planes but not all planes are jets.

Yellow arrow: The party store parking lot, Michigan Ave/Denton Rd, where i parked. This plane flew over LOUDLY.
Will never forget that turn. Came from behind the building. Scared all of us 'badly' real good for lack of better words.
My black Cobra is the faint black dot in center of parking lot. The lot where several others and me watch this show.
No way could have ever got a pic of the plane. Happened too fast and unexpected demo flight pattern deviation.

Did a short video, too shaking, my wife was looking for Dramamine after watching.
My digital camera is ok but not like a good film camera with a 1000/sec shutter to get good action shots.
I've got to see how the old SLR camera is and get a roll of film at Walmart.
Took some real good race track pics with that.
Missed the B 24, fumbled with the camera.
One of only 2 still airworthy left .
May have one more chance tomorrow before church.
Start 1/2 hour rides at 9:00, we're about at the return point.
That gives me about a 15 minute window.

Great pictures, Ray. One of the guys I work with at the New England Air Museum on Bradley Airport was going to ride on the B-17 this weekend. I'll see him on Tuesday and get a report.

One day a few years ago, I was behind my house doing some Happy Homeowner yard work when I heard a propeller driven airplane take off from Bradley (about 2 miles away). I could tell from the sound that it had recip engines, so wasn't an Air Guard C-130 Herky Bird. I went out in front of the house and saw the B-29 "Fifi" coming toward me and then it turned right and headed west. Majestic.

That was taken in the driveway in front of the house.
I bet every time you walk around Jack's Hack at the museum you think back of FiFi flying past the house

    Default V

Couple seconds late on one. 4 recip engines not sure type of aircraft.
What was unusual is it was flying toward a 'V' cloud formation in background. Victory?

I used to live near the Flying Heritage Museum in Everett, WA. Throughout the Summer, they would fly their aircaft. it was always a sight to see. B-17 with a fighter escort. P-47, P-51, P-6 Hellcat, a British Spitfire, along with some German WWII aircraft were a regular summertime sight. I always stopped what I was doing to watch them fly by. Sadly, I moved away from their normal flight path.

The sound of their piston engines were awesome. A far cry from the Boeing jets that would shake the house when they took off in my direction. Those Dreamlifters took awhile to gain altitude.

Tragic news - the same B-17 crashed this morning at Bradley Airport in Windsor Locks. According to the earlier news reports, there were 13 people on board and five were killed in the crash. Later reports now say seven fatalities.

One of my co-workers flew as a passenger on that plane this past weekend.

Was wondering which B-17 it was when i heard the news.
Then remembered this thread. Thanks for posting.
What a bummer. The news has been repeated here.
Detroit area's Yankee Air Force Museum vintage bombers are occasionally seen in the air every summer.
The dedication and work to preserve major US history items, some as actual flying ww II memorials, should never be forgotten.

    From AP news:

"The Collings Foundation confirmed the plane that crashed was the B-17 nicknamed the “Nine-O-Nine,” the same plane that crashed in August 1987 at an air show near Pittsburgh.

In the 1987 crash, the bomber overshot a Pennsylvania runway while attempting to land at Beaver County Airport in gusty winds and plunged down a hillside as thousands of spectators were waiting for the show’s finale.

The Federal Aviation Administration said three people were injured in the crash. The FAA said the plane’s airspeed was excessive and cited pilot errors.

The foundation says damage to the plane was repaired, and it went on make more than 1,200 tour stop.

The plane was named the “Nine-O-Nine” in honor of another B-17 of the same name that successfully completed 140 missions during World War II."

Very sad to hear about the Nine-O-Nine her passengers and crew.
I live in Virginia Beach and we have an outstanding Military Aviation Museum that builds and restores WW1 and WW2 aircraft to flying condition and operates them regularly including large air shows. At one time they restored a B-17 named Chuckie here but it was sold to another museum. If you are in the area I highly recommend checking this museum out. Their attention to history and detail includes a control tower that was purchased from a World War 2 fighter airbase in Lincolnshire England and reassembled here, a German WW2 hanger also reassembled here and a working German 88 antiaircraft gun among others. (See the links below)

That's me climbing into the Stearman biplane trainer for a flight. An open cockpit aircraft is like nothing else!

It's a shame, lost too much in a instant.
The Collings Foundation has canceled the Wings of Freedom tour till the end of the year.
The other sucky part is it has been the lead story here since Wednesday, hard to get away from it.

Sad for the losses. Never forget the efforts of those brave people.
