    Default 1983 Capri RS fender liner panel?

    So disassembly of the 1983 Capri RS began today. We noticed this additional panel on the driver's side front inner fender. It is factory and can't really see what the purpose is. Any ideas?

    So your saying the master got stumped?

    Yup! He pulled it off and said he'd never seen it before. So I thought I'd throw some pictures in and see if someone can educate the master!

    Never seen something like that.
    An access panel? Anything behind it needing access like fuel line connections?
    Can be handy. Have done stuff like that in the past and will do more if needed.
    Some areas are too hard to get to via disassembly.
    Custom cut made to look factory? Have a real close look at the edges.
    I mean i can do the same thing. Have those same screws.

    That's what we thought too, maybe some access to the fuel lines. But there is nothing behind it and the original full inner fender liner is untouched. This additional panel does extend to the pinch weld a little better than the actual inner fender liner. It almost looks like this panel helps secure the inner finder liner behind the fender to the pinch weld?

    Yes, I am stumped!

    As much as I can tell it appears to be original and factory. The inner liner is slightly different than most since it doesn't have the lower section that covers the bottom fender bolt because this "extra" piece does that. It didn't appear to be modified or altered, but honestly no idea.

    The piece in the picture is slightly thicker plastic than the inner liner and obviously held up very well. Definitely the first time I have seen one of these. Not sure if maybe it was a change by Ford in those years, or possibly a Dealer "Repair" or something. Will be interesting to figure it out.

    Possibly, but not sure why unless there was some problem with the fender liners that year. I didn't spend a lot of time looking at the liner in detail, but it didn't appeared hacked up, so if it was modified I will give the installer thumbs up for a nice job.

    Maybe lower door pin and bushing instead of removing the door but that not a ford job

    I can't guarantee anything, but the outer smaller piece appears to be slightly thicker than the inner liner underneath. The inner liner underneath doesn't have the section that covers the lower fender bolt. It's possible someone cut it off at some point in time, but overall the repair has a quality/professional look to it. Again could have been a repair by the dealership, a previous owner, who knows! Still interesting IMHO.
