    Default Identifying WC t5

Hey guys, is there anyway to identify if your transmission is a wc t5 while it's in the car? Bought a 85 gt and wanted to see what it is.

    Thanks

That's certainly a fair question but you are aware, the "WC" designation had nothing to do with strength, right? Even the 2.3 T5 was a WC. Granted with different gear ratios but still the same WC T5 designation. The first WC T5s had the exact same torque rating as the non WC. They did eventually develop the transmission further and rated it higher but a first year WC has the same torque rating as the last year non WC did.

Edit, just read your updated post. So basically the wc transmission out of the 85 is no better than the nwc out of my 84?

They made running changes to improve the durability of it. They even lengthened the shift throw in 1990 to keep people who were racing from shifting with so much force and breaking the shift forks. It wasn't an improvement, it was a band aid to prevent the 87-89 issue where people were busting shift forks when speed shifting. Not counting the Cobra, the "best" WC T5 has a Torx bolt on the opposite side of the transmission from the fill and drain plugs if you are strictly talking Mustangs.

If someone has mixed and matched all bets are off. I can make a Chevy S10 T5 fit your 5.0. The AMC Eagle came with a T5. The strongest was the 87-93. That is the strongest (still weak 300lb ft) rated commonly available Ford T5. Again. Cobra aside.

A 1985-86 T5 would have the standard bolt instead of the Torx and still be a WC but that's not really relevant. They were no stronger than the non WC anyway.

Apparently even the Chevette came with a T5, LOL.

Yes, I am a terrible typist. So I have to go back and fix it. Correct. The Non WC has the same torque capacity as the first year WC T5. You really want a later WC T5. Heck you'll never find a Cobra box but they had the steel bearing retainer and stronger tapered bearings and carbon blocker rings and syncros. G-Force can turn your 85 WC T5 into a Cobra box if you want.

There are tags on the originally with a number that starts with 1352.

1352-169 is the tag on the 1986 WC T5 found in the V8 cars

having killed more T5’s that I can count off the top of my head, I can tell you that one of the most durable of the non T5Z bunch was the 1352-204. It was a ford parts replacement unit, but it was a $1800 part in 1993!! The gears were treated. The synchros were very good as long as nobody put Teflon in the transclube (oops, guilty). I killed one 150K miles. Years later I killed another reportedly new one in 10K miles.... go figure.

D&D bought up Ford’s warranty stock in the 90’s that were left over from 93 production. They got them as the 93 extended warranties came to an end. 1352-199 was the tags on them if memory serves. They put some carbon fiber mods in those transmissions and made a T5 that was rated at 315 and was very good. I had one last over 200K miles — it put up with my endless thrashing seemingly forever and my car was cranked up on kill and running sticky tires!

these days I’ve ended the T5 and T5Z drama. I’m just sick of it. I had a Gforce kit put in one of my 1352-169 86 T5. That will go into my 85 build. It had plenty of Astro hardware in it too, supposed to be good for 650 ft lbs.

Ha. That's what I just said. I couldn't agree more. If you are concerned with strength. WC is meaningless. Call G-Force.

Thanks guys, new to this so this is all good knowledge. From reading online it seemed that if it was a wc then it was automatically better than the nwc. Guess not lol

Update, talked to previous owner and the transmission is from a 88 or 89 4 cylinder mustang.

Get the VIN from the transmission and it will tell you what it's from. Even if the ID tag is gone the VIN will still be there, unless somebody ground it off the case.

So it is still a WC transmission. It's just the gear ratios are not ideal for a V8 is all.

Yup which is probably why there is problems with it right now.
