Gearing depends a lot on how the car is cammed and what the induction is

My son’s 86 ragtop has a mostly stock 86 HO with a VM1 ECU and it’s turned up. It’s geared with 2.95:1 low, 0.63:1 5th T5Z with 2.73’s. It runs under 1500 at 70 and gets between 29 and 32 mpg cruising down the freeway.

While you have to be hard on the clutch to launch it properly, it can run in the 13’s and it will go WAY faster than anyone should ever drive.

It just depends upon what you want to do with your car.

My 85 Saleen build is using a Gforce kit with 2.95/0.59 and 3.55 rear gears. Party time 1-4, cruise in 5th at the same RPM a 3.08 0.68 car ran from the factory.

My car is 100 % stock as far as motor is concerned. It drives like a kitten on the street. But then again, I gave up street racing when I was 18.

Man, I like to keep my car right around 1000rpms when I drive. I'll floor it up to the speed limit then shift right into 5th, pretty much no matter what.

My 2:73 rear with a .68 od t-5 was pretty happy at 40mph in 5th. 35 was a bit low, it would buck so I left it in 4th for speed limits from 25-35mph.

I still think a 13s 1/4 is fast. I can only remember one car 25 years ago in a 50 mile radius that could go that fast it was a capri with heads(reworked iron of course) cam etc.
Most people only slapped a performer on there carbed fox and thought it was wild.
Factory cams had way more torque down low so 2 73 3.08 work good enough.

These thumpy high revving cams need lower to get off the line.

Some of these cars with a properly abusive driver behind the wheel went 13.90’s with factory timing and intake silencer in place. The quickest one I’ve seen was 13.86 before the usually stuff is played with. But make no mistake, launching with a 2.73 (or a 3.0 is difficult because the window between bog and tire smoke is so narrow .... it’s a little more forgiving on the tire smoke side with a lighter flywheel but bog is even harder to avoid. Any way you slice it, it’s HELL on clutches.

There is so much you can play with on these things to make them quicker and faster. All of it is absolutely raw and untamed. So much fun too.

Ive avoided swapping gears on my cars because I rarely race them and have had luck launching in spite of the highway gears when I want to which is very infrequent. On my worn out old 86GT I run a T5Z with 2.73 and 245/45/17’s with a Typhoon EFI and A9L MAF conversion, 70MM MAF, 65MM TB, equal 1 5/8 shorty headers, 2.5” cats, 2.5” flowmasters, underdrive pulleys, etc. Gives the tired old motor a little bit of a break between beatings by a few less RPM. what’s fun about the current gearing is if I don’t bog it off the line it can do some pretty sick 0-60 pulls .... all if it in 1st gear. You can do the math on 2-5.... it does pull nicely in every gear and go way faster than anyone should ever drive it. The injectors are at max duty cycle even with a slight increase in fuel pressure and the engine still leans out up top so it is producing great power for an E6 head motor. More than most will say is possible since they are “junk” and stuff. It has been played with a little bit in the cam department which helps

The guidance above if 3.27 rear gear is good advise for a car that gets driven a lot. Your in town MPG will improve. Your highway mileage at 65 will also. Really no major down side

    Default 2:73 VS 3:73 ratio

I went from 2.73s to 3.73s in my car. Totally worth it. It runs at 2500ish rpm at 75 mph on the highway.

Oops sorry for the double post.

I switched from 2.73 to 3.73 in my car. It runs about 2500 rpm at 70-75 mph on the highway. Totally worth it in my opinion. 3.55s work really well too.
