From what I remember you slide a thin regular slot screw driver over the top middle part of the vent and press down on the tab to release, then it will come out.
HAD
'82 GT monochromatic (red)...black cloth
HAVE
'85 GT vert two tone (white on charcoal)...white leather
'00 F350 two tone (white on silver)...gray cloth
'00 Excursion Limited two tone (white on tan)...tan leather...wifes ride
'08 Taurus Limited ice blue...tan leather...daughter ride
'08 Edge Limited white sand tri-coat metallic...tan leather...other daughters ride
A large tool may scratch plastic or leave marks.
Removal:
Tug on vent assembly when releasing tabs.
Reinstall:
Push vent assy back in duct. It will snap back in.

Rather than risk scratching the dash bezel, use the small flat blade on the INSIDE of the vent to pry up on the hinge pin that you can see in the above picture.

Reason why i did it that way was more chance of damaging the tab if prying on it from inside.
Not much clearance digging into the space around the tab. But will work too.
Some masking tape or a piece of paper on the plastic should protect it.
Shop manual does show inserting the blade of a pocket knife thru the register louver to pry up the pivot retaining tab.
Says the pivot hole diameters are different and therefore determine installed position.
