Default 1982 Merc. Capri RS 5.0

The time has come for me to part ways with a long time "member" of my family. Dad bought it brand new, I learned to drive in it at 15yrs old. Took over payments at 16 yrs old and sold it to my best buddy in the spring of 1985 (to buy a new GT). It had 28k miles on it then. Bought it back from him in 1997 and had it painted and refreshed the drive train. It had 68k miles on it then. It was back in full service in 2002 and I've enjoyed it since, driving it another 50k+ miles since. It now shows 116k.

Interior is box stock with exception of radio I installed in 2002 (Still have original, working Premium Sound System). I also added the oil/temp gauges then. Correct color for this car, which looks just like the "black magic" interiors from then.
Engine has a Holley 600 with intake (I have original 2bb/Intake otherwise its a stock engine/tranny, 8.8 rear with 3.73's (wish they were 3.55!) Runs well, always super reliable, but now drips some oil (rear seal), and I suspect a valve guide is going (some initial smoke at first start when sitting a while).

Original TRX rims are pretty mint (needs rear tires, fronts were new in 2012)
Body is rust free, but has some road rash on it now..been driven over the past 16 yrs!
Its an honest, "one family-sort of" owned 82 in the right color and history. Too bad I need to sell...its been "around" me for 36 years!!

Yes, I haven't seen another like that, even back in the day, but that was how it was ordered by the dealer. We just picked it out of 3 other Capris on the lot. Dad liked that it had a "V8" instead of a noisy 6 or 4 in his words. He's "old school"..I knew what it was then...and certainly pushed for it as much as I could!

I should mention that it is a Sunroof car, with the Pwr lock group package. Everything works, A/C is cold when fresh R12 is loaded, but leaks it out in about 2-3 months.

You say it has a 8.8 rear... are you sure? thought 82's came with the 7.5 (my 82 capri RS has the 7.5)

    Any issues with the sunroof?

Would you consider this car to be a DD?
    Thanks

7.5 rear went bad in 2004 ish...found an 8.8 in Dallas area for a decent price, so changed it then. Originally had 3.08 gears, 3.55's would be ideal, but cash was tight, so 8.8 w/3.73's went in. Did swap over the "slapper bar" assembly so it looks "normal" from that point.
Sunroof needs weatherstripping, and it rattles a bit when open.

Car is reliable enough to be a DD, perhaps a bit too nice to do so. Given it's 36 yrs old, probably not ideal, but certainly runs/drives nice enough for that kind of use.

Car is sold! Thank you all for the kind words and to those of you who reached out to me with inquiries.
It is going back home, to my buddy that I first sold it to in 1985! He has accumulated a nice "stable" of FOX bodies but has always wanted the "PRI" back, so after 21 yrs away, it returns to its "home"....other than my home!

Wow......I can't believe this one went for sale right under my nose and I missed it!!!

Mike, you may or may not remember me, but we've spoken a few times, mostly at the Shelby Meet......black 86 Capri (Ray) .......sorry to hear the need to sell her but glad to hear it went to a close friend so you can keep tabs on her. Is it still local to Tulsa?

I was buying this car but, the front frame rail on the drivers side is rusted out. Too bad, other than that this car is SWEET!

It’s weird that these cars can be clean with rust issues just in one spot. I’ve seen them like that, it’s allmost like the Midwest and northeast will lay claim to a car no matter how well it’s been cared for

its the propensity for these cars to leak break fluid in that one spot, with owners unaware. A little can turn into a lot easily.

Pretty sure he was the buyer...sounds like he had to back out after seeing the rust on inspection?
