    Default Noisey smog pump?

The smog pump on my Saleen got super noisy on the way back from Bellevue a couple weekends ago. I read up on them and everyone has their own opinion on what to do. People say to take them off and run a shorter belt. Others say reman ones are nothing but problems buy used. I still need to pass Oregon emissions so I still need it functional. Supposedly Ford used the same pump on many different models. Not sure about that. But I did have a couple smog pumps off 2.3l pintos. They are not the same as the 5.0. The housing is different but the guts inside are the same. Anyway the front bearing was bad on mine. I bought a new one that was made in Japan for under $8. Part number 6203-RS. I cleaned it out and lubed the other bearings while I had it apart. It’s back to normal now, no noise. You need to make a puller to get the front pulley off the shaft. I used a flat piece of steel plate and some longer bolts. Drilled the holes to match the pattern of the pulley bolts and just tightened the bolts down since the shaft sticks up above the pulley. You will need to use a nut or spacer on the top of the shaft once the plate/tool is flush with the pulley. Or else you will not be able to remove the pulley completely. Took me about an hour once I had the tool made. Hope this helps someone. Sure is lots cheaper than spending $180-$250 for a reman pump.

Here are some pictures of the Pinto smog pump.

This is the front bearing. This is what went out on me that I had to replace. This one is in bad shape as well.

This is the drum assembly. It is the same as what is in the Mustang.

    Good write up.
When it gets noisy, eventually will seize up.
Then smoke, belt snaps, and flies around the engine compartment.
Hopefully not wedging under or tangling into existing main rotating belt(s).
    Been there. 2x.

For some reason, I've never had good luck with remanufactured smog pumps. Every single one I had got was noisy as all can be. I wound up finding an original from another Mustang that was still in good shape. Been good ever since.

For non smog required, can the pump be gutted and made to spin like normal?

You can but it is kind of a weird design. It will still need to spin on two bearings though and one in the back I am not sure if it is available. I have the Pinto smog pump still apart. I will try and post some pictures later tonight.

Thanks, I wish Oregon would go back to the 20 year rule so I don't have to go thru DEQ anymore with all my pre-96 cars.

I credit my Uncle Frank for teaching me how to fix things. My uncle was a retired mechanic when I when I was a teenager. In High School, I took auto shop so I could fix my 67 Coupe. When I would go to visit him, he always would have some sort of car project lined up for us work on. One time he asked me what they taught us in shop class. Did we just replace parts or did we actually fix things? He said real mechanics fix things. He lived on a ranch 20 miles from the nearest town. Sometimes you had to just make it work. Anyway, he taught me how to rebuild alternators, starters, steering boxes, master cylinders etc. Now master cylinders are not worth rebuilding but to this day I try and fix stuff before I replace it. I have not bought an alternator or starter in many many years. He was my favorite uncle.

When I was going to school , we had 1 parts store in town .
Fixing was much less money than replacing .
Rebuild a starter or alternator for 5 bucks .
Today , there are a dozen McParts stores , parts are cheap , and you may need to return them many times before you get a good one .
I can still buy the parts to rebuild a starter or alternator locally .
And I live 30 miles from town , so I am aware of rebuilding something in the field so to speak .
You should move south , no DEQ , For 20 years and older .

I well remember fixing stuff. Or more accurately walking the junk yard until I found enough parts broken in different ways to make a good part that will work.

No DEQ at all around here...

Getting creative in fixing stuff shows good thought process and is to be commended! I rebuilt several motorcycle starters that were hard to find, and expensive to replace.

The back bearing looks like the rear bearing on the alternator.
