    Default Canyon Red interior questions

Hey guys, in the process of trying to redo some of my canyon red interior plastics. I bought some cans of the duplicolor Ford original dark canyon red paint. I've done the scuff plates and kick panels and while they look good they do seem dark.

Has anybody used this paint before? I'm kind of Leary now to use it on the bigger back panels.

One must realize , these panels have faded over the years , and it may be difficult to find an area that you can use as a reference.

Ya man I hear ya. I was just confused at them labeling the can as dark canyon red but the actual color is just canyon red.

I might be wrong, but I don't believe Duplicolor offers an INTERIOR paint for the Ford Dark Canyon Red. I might be wrong, but I would verify that first. I think you might be using the exterior touch up paint rather than an interior paint.

Personally I would recommend NPD's interior paint for any touch ups or even complete repaints as I have had good luck with their paint and color matches. I would also recommend looking at the back side of one of the interior panels/pieces to get an idea of the original color. It might not be exact, but if the part was molded in color then it will give you a good idea of the original color. Good Luck!

This is a finished piece. I used plastic prep on it before.

I have used Duplicolor a couple of times. I have found it too glossy for the 85 Tan dash pad and other panels in black.

I recently painted a dash pad for my wife’s 67 Tbird. My research suggested it was the same as the 67 Mustang. I purchased the red metallic from NPD for a 67 Mustang as no one sells paint for a 60s Tbird. The color match was very nice. Later I was moving around an extra 84 canyon red kick panel and thought it could use a touch up. I thought it matched the 84 color quite well. I would go with the next level of gloss as what I used was very flat or low gloss. BTW, I can’t see @ny metallic in it. I will try to post up a picture.

I have not checked to see if NPD sells the 84 color

That appears to be the Exterior Canyon Red touch up paint to me. Maybe it's different in Canada, but I don't believe that is what you want for the interior pieces. The piece you show painted appears to me to be the exterior Canyon Red color and not the interior Canyon Red color.

Although pictures on the internet are not the best way to match colors, this is essentially what your Canyon Red should look like.

I believe you can see that the interior Canyon Red has more brown tones in it and less of the burgundy or candy apple red look to it. Hope that helps.

That is the Semi-gloss version. They offer a Flat version too, but in my experience the flat is not the correct sheen for the Foxes. Good Luck!

Thanks Trey, good thing I did not paint more lol. Is the canyon red from LMR comparable to SEM?

that's exterior paint not interior. LMR or NPD sells SEM interior paint and dyes that match perfect.

Ok so it's obvious now I used exterior paint on some interior parts. What's the best way to fix the parts that I've painted already? Sandblasting with soft media? ie walnut shells? Or something else to get the paint off?

Try painting prep solvent. Basically the stuff you would use to clean them before painting.

Be warned that this paint is very, very thin and it takes several coats to get a good even finish. It gets expensive. As I recall, one can provided good coverage for 1 rear interior quarter panel trim on a hatchback.

I have had better luck with the NPD paint even in red than the LMR. LMR used to sell SEM, but honestly now that they private label it I have no idea if its really SEM or not.

As for removing the paint, you can try Lacquer thinner, but be careful as you might damage the panel with the Lacquer Thinner. Good Luck!

Be careful with the lacquer thinner. If you use to much you can melt the plastic

So is the goof off any safer than lacquer thinner?

Yes, but Goof Off is primarily designed for latex and adhesive based materials. It may or may not work on the Duplicolor. Shouldn't damage the part as long as you don't soak it with Goof Off.

SEM Napa red part # 15273 is what you need.
