Default Reinstalling body molding on rear quarter panel

Hey all, the driver's side molding that sits immediately behind the rear wheel met an unfortunate fate due to an errant snowblower last winter, so I need to install the new repro piece I bought. I'm having trouble figuring out how this is actually attached- is it done with thick double sided adhesive? The new piece has two plastic "towers" that extend from the rear of it that fit into holes in the quarter panel but they don't anchor the molding piece in any way. I don't see how to secure the piece other than with some kind of adhesive. I'd love some input on this. Thanks!

    The towers are plastic right?

You use the original hardware to cut threads into the towers iirc.

Yes. The nuts you took off the old piece are called thread cutting nuts. Once you start them they will cut their own threads into the plastic pegs that stick thru the holes.

I took nothing off of the old piece- an errant snowblower (my ex wife...grr) clipped the molding and it flew off and shattered in a bunch of pieces from the cold. I'm guessing I can't buy that hardware anywhere...? Crap.

This assortment will most likely take care of you. I believe the mounting studs are 1/4" but double check that as I don't have a molding in front of me right now. I can double check the size tomorrow. You may be able to get your local parts store to order the Dorman part number and get them quicker or cheaper too.

Very appreciated! I'm curious as to how these thread cutting nuts are attached as you can't access the back side of the quarter panel to attach these. It's probably simple and I'm just overlooking how these would be screwed on...

You can probably get what you need at a good hardware store too. You have to remove the interior trim panel at the rear and remove a couple of the screws holding the interior quarter panel. From there you can get down in the trunk drop off area to put the nuts on.

You should be able to get the nuts local at an ACE hardware or Fastenal. If you don't want to remove the inner qtr plastic panels to gain access for the nuts you can use 3M double sided tape. This will be kind of hard since the molding isn't a flat piece to put tape on. Personally I would do it the correct way and remove the rear qtr plastics. It's been awhile, but you should be able to loosen them enough to gain access.

Ahhh, removing the interior panels, duh! That was the basic bit I was missing. I haven't been in there in a while and I forgot how it exposes the entire inner part of that rear quarter. Thanks!

And... there was slightly more involved than the snowblower incident, otherwise that would be ICE cold...
