Cool I am back!! Pics added!

    Maybe nobody cares...

I was a VERY active member here for many years and left in '08 when I sold my '83 hatch. Well, I just bought a 1981 Granada and am super excited to get back and involved!

Anyway I have no clue if anyone remembers me or not, but I look forward to meeting a bunch of new folks and maybe reuniting with some old ones.

I don't know you but welcome back! It may be a little quieter than you remember. It's quieter now even since I joined I think sometimes..

Regardless, welcome back! In FEP forum-land, you cannot state you have a new to you car and not post pictures to share!

Car is still not here yet. It is non-running so I have to tow it the 22 miles home. The previous owner should text me a few to use in the meantime soon. The avatar pic is it though.

I did notice it is quieter. I suppose as the cars age there are fewer interested in maintaining them, which is too bad. I look forward to playing with this '4-doored mustang' (one of only two years of the Granada badge on the fox platform). Some might wonder- what is my plan?

First get it on the road. A head gasket and general maintenance should accomplish that. Then, start stockpiling parts for a V8 conversion. This car already has a manual trans (SROD for now) which is what I want. Body is quite straight but in need of paint and a little work. I will probably do to this car similarly to what I did with my old '83 hatch. A very driveable, obnoxious sounding, decent handling sedan. Subframe connectors will be very close to the first add on. The window channel felt/weatherstrip, suspension work (springs, shocks, eventually control arms). Thinking of putting a tubular front member this time around. Or go with a turbo four. Just don't know yet.

    Anyway...

Unfortunately FB and other online areas seem to be slowing down the Forums. The same is going on over at Corner-Carvers. com too. It's too bad, but I guess its just how things are. I still spend a ton of time here, but lately I have been working so much and so many hours that I just don't have the free time to work on my Four Eyes or even post much up here. There are still a lot of us that visit, but the post seem to be fewer and farther between. If you want feedback, photos will always help otherwise most will read your posts and move on.

Good Luck with the project and get us some pictures!

Your advice has helped me a great deal. All your posts. Even down here!

Your lucky having had a Dad who has worked on Fords as a serviceman...it makes you appreciate good Ford engineering. My Dad used to buy bits for a municipal electricity fleet and I too am lucky to have people in the neighbourhood who worked on Fords for a living, and as a recreational Sport. My favorite time was when I was 17 getting pulled up by an officer in my Escort Van doing 76 mph in a 55 zone. The guy was trying soooooo hard to not to laugh and stay professional, but when asking me why I was speeding so fast in a car that couldn't do 76 mph, he was amazed I took the ticket and said, Sorry Officer. "Just curious", he said. "Girl friend, fire at home. They are not good excuses for speeding, but common. Nothing to say, sir....?"

Thing was, just the night before, I was in the same area in my 58 Vauxhall Velox doing 95 mph. Of course, he probably knew that already, eh?

The morning before that, I met a young Matt Lauer touring Central Otago in a 1969 brown Ford Corsair V4 with his carb giving him flooding problems. Before the NBC Today hassles.

    Your advice to MARZ, priceless....

Wow, XCtasy, you have a good memory! So glad I was able to be a positive influence! Yeah- having a dad as service foreman was great and I spent time with him on the line in the work bays unofficially. Miss him quite a bit as he passed in 2011.

Went to neighbor's to ask if he could help me load it on to a car dolly tomorrow and he volunteered his enclosed trailer and his help. Awesome neighbor! So, if all goes as planned the car will be in my driveway around 1030 am. PO says it was just the head gasket. Going to have the head checked/trued/etc while it's off. Visual check of the cylinder walls at the same time.

Glad you picked that car up; I was thinking that it was so cool that I was going to HAVE to go get it. (Was surprised at how long it was on Craigslist.) Not that I don't have a bunch of other cars already.

Funny that you saw it there! We were texting him back in February and he just stopped responding so I thought it was maybe a scam. Wife saw it again. Turns out the guy just hit a rough patch that snowballed. He was quite happy when I told him I would be happy to keep him posted on the car's progress into a pretty and fun street ride.

Got it home today. Daughter was excited! Can't wait to get it road worthy. Head gasket, all new fluids, maybe flush the brake fluid and inspect it all.

Started taking parts off today. Pulled the carb (new) and found it has no choke. Rod that operates the plates was not connected to anything. Pulled the alt, timing cover, drained the coolant (after it started leaking as I pulled out the top intake manifold bolts before draining it. Oops.). Pulled valve cover and at least two lobes have some scoring I can feel with my finger pretty easily. When I have the head done I might just replace the cam. Motor has unknown mileage (came from an '85 Mustang) so we shall see what the cylinder walls look like. I just want it dependable for now. Planning a new motor later.

Maybe I missed it, but what engine does it have in it? Any pics of the interior? Is it an original manual transmission car? Can't be many of those around.

As far as I know it is. It is the 'L' model, so bottom of the line option wise. It has a 2.3 I4 and the SROD manual. Interior is serviceable. I will be looking for a few boneyard replacement plastic parts. Door panels are quite good for age, not cut up at all. Dash pad is holey through the speaker cutouts. Seats are worn in front, carpet faded.Name: image (1).jpg

Looks great! I love seeing Granada/Cougar interiors in more interesting colors than Mustangs or F/Zs got. Dodged a bullet not having the vinyl roof too!

Yup! But, it is going to take a bit more than I had hoped to make it driveable. Finally got the head off- one bolt sheared off with about 1/2" sticking out of the block. When I bought it the PO told me the head gasket was bad between cyl's 1 and 2. Boy was it. It appears to have been driven that way for a while. That head bolt between 1&2 on the passenger side was rusted to hades. Looks like whoever installed the head sheared it by over torquing it which led to the gasket failing.

But, head is off. Too much OT at work this week so hopefully drop it at a machine shop Friday or early next week for milling, valve seals, clean up, lapping, etc -- have them make it road worthy, but I do not want to spend a lot on an unknown motor.

I think the plan is to build a new 2.3 once I at least have this one driveable, in the next year or two. Unknown if turbo, high compression and bored, or what yet, but thinking of keeping with the 4 cyl.

Hopefully I will get the busted/rust frozen head bolt out tomorrow and take the head to get done Monday. The I can get the block surface all cleaned up Wednesday and put stuff together Friday. Gotta get all new hoses and the like, but that's easy stuff.

Neighbor brought over his 110v welder and welded a nut to the bolt. Came right out. I am sure the super high heat helped as I have been soaking it in penetrant for several days.

Brought the head to a machine shop and they were shocked as they had not seen one of the old Pinto heads for a very long time. Really? They are telling me they will do the work but probably not be able to install the (followers? The things you pry off with a screwdriver that ride under the cam lobe to the valve) because they are not sure how. Hopefully I get a serviceable head to install. This is one of the better shops in Eugene.
