Default 1980 door latch differences ?

So I was was doing some door work changing hinge pins on my sons 1980 cobra and also decided I was also going to change the passenger door latch with one I pulled off an 85 or 86.

Lo and behold I get it put in and find the they are slightly different where the inside lock rod connects. Its the wrong way.

Anyone know which year they changed (looks like maybe 83+) and who would sell a new replacement for the old style if needed ?

    Thanks

I believe the 79/80 models are unique with the door lock rod at the arm rest rather than thru the top of the door panel. So you need one from those two year models. Otherwise you can swap in the 81-93 style, but you will need to swap in the lock rod from the later model and drill a hole in the top of the door panel.

If you don't have any luck finding a 79/80 door latch, then send me a PM as I believe I have a spare or two. Good Luck!

Thanks I will keep my eye out for one. The 79-80 models are getting fairly rare at the junkyards but they do turn up from time to time.

Its not critical yet but will keep your offer in mind

NPD has some latches that say for 79-80 but its a bit confusing on the application description...and I was a bit surprised at the cost. However there are lots of things going on with the latch for sure with four linkages hooking up to it.

Worst case if desperate I could just use the older style without the ability to lock from the inside. It still opens a locked door with the inside handle and can lock from the outside with a key...a bit of a pain though for sure.

I believe NPD is offering the later model style latch as a retro-fit to the early cars. As I stated above, you could swap the latch and just use the later style lock rod that goes thru the top of the door rather than the arm rest.

    Good Luck!
